National Research Tomsk State University, TSU (Russian: Национа́льный иссле́довательский То́мский госуда́рственный университе́т) is a public research university located in Siberia, Russia. On May 28, 1878, Emperor Alexander II signed a decree on the establishment of the first and only higher education institution in the vast expanses from the Russian Urals to the Pacific Ocean – the Siberian Imperial University in Tomsk, Russia. The TSU is the first Russian university in Asia.
TSU was opened in 1888. The first classes for the first 72 students began on September 1, 1888 at the single, Medical Faculty. Classes were given by eight professors, aided by seven assistants and laboratory technicians. Professor Nikolai Gezekhus was appointed the first rector of the University. ...

At present, there are 23 Faculties and Institutes with 151 Departments and about 23,000 students (among them are about 2,000 international students).

The University's pride is its Scientific Library (4 million copies, the rare book museum) and the Siberian Botanical Garden.

In 2018, asteroid 343322 Tomskuniver wa s named in honor of Tomsk State University.

Reputation
National Research Tomsk State University is often regarded as one of the best universities in Russia as well as one of the best in BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and the former Soviet-Union. Additionally, it often ranks within the top-250 in global ratings. As of 2017, National Research Tomsk State University was the overall third best classical university in Russia according to RIA Novosti—outperformed only by Moscow State University and Ural Federal University.

The university has also been historically recognised as one of the most important universities in Russia and the Soviet Union, having been awarded various medals during Soviet Times, such as the Order of the October Revolution and Order of the Red Banner of Labour as well as being one of the nine universities in Russia to have received the title "National Research".

The Research Library
The Research Library and Tomsk State University were opened in the same year, 1888. The founder of the library was Vasily Florinskiy – physician and writer, organizer of Tomsk University. Both Tomsk State University and the Research Library was given a status of a Particularly Valuable Object of the Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of the Russian Federation. In 2016 The Library contained 3.8 million depositary units, including over 124,000 manuscripts and rare books.

SKIF Cyberia Supercomputer
In 2006, Tomsk State University was one of the 17 universities to win in the Russian competition of innovative educational programs. One of the results of this competition was the formation of the Tomsk State University's supercomputing cluster jointly funded by the federal government and co-financing from the extra budgetary funds of the university and assembled by T-Platforms.

At the initial time of inauguration, it was one of the top 100 supercomputers on the planet. And, for more than a year, it was the fastest supercomputer in both Eastern Europe and the CIS.

It has since been modernised several times. Once in 2010. And, again in 2015. As of September 2018, the cluster has 11.8 terabytes of memory, 564 Xeon 5150s, 696 Xeon 5670s, 50 Xeon E5-2695 V3s, and 50 Tesla K80s for a total peak performance of 106.82 teraflops.

International Сooperation 

One of main priorities of Tomsk State University is development of the international cooperation with the leading international training and research centers.  

In 2013, TSU was a coordinator of a large-scale TEMPUS project which gathered ten Russian and international partner higher education institutions. Besides, TSU cooperates with Makarturov Fund,    Oxford Russian Fund and others. 17 projects have been organized with such non-profit organization as INTAS and TEMPUS TACIS. 

Every year TSU improves its position in different rankings. According to INTERFAX rankings TSU is the only Tomsk higher education institution, which has been included in the top ten universities among the CIS countries, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia and takes the 10th place among Russian higher educational institutions, which have entered the Webometrics universities rankings. Currently more than 170 interuniversity agreements are concluded with TSU. There are number of partners from Europe (Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Italy, and Slovenia), Latin America (Brazil), Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore), the Southern Asia (India), East Asia (China, Japan).

Tomsk State University seeks to expand its networks with international representatives. Since 2015 TSU has became the coordinator of Russian-Indian Association of Universities and Global Universities Association – the Italian Universities. Since 2006, the University is in the European Association of Universities (EUA); is a member of the European Network of Continuous Education (EUCEN), and network of National Ecological Observatories (NEON, the USA). 

Since 2013 Professor Terrence Vincent Callaghan, head of TSU International Academic Council, takes active participation in promoting TSU at the international level. Prof.  Callaghan is an expert of the United Nations in global climate changes, and possesses the special certificate of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for an outstanding contribution in receiving IPCC Nobel Peace Prize. In 2016, Trans-Siberian Scientific Way global research center was founded by virtue of SecNET international network and personal support of prof. Callaghan. This center deals with comprehensive understanding of changes of the environment in Siberia, and consequences of these changes on a global scale. Not only Russian scientists but also representatives Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, and the Czech Republic scientific centers are involved in the project.  

In 2008 Confucius's Institute was opened with the assistance of Shenyang Ligong University. In 2016, TSU Confucius Institute became the best Confucius Institute in Russia. In addition, in 2010 the analogue of Confucius Institute – the Center for Russian Studies named after A. S. Pushkin was opened in Shenyang Ligong University. The development of the Center would not be possible without help from TSU. 

TSU offers double degree programmes for both bachelor’s and  master’s students. Double degree programmes are implemented together with Maastricht University (Netherlands), Lille University-1 – Sciences and Technologies (France), Free University of Brussels (Belgium). University of Coimbra (Portugal), Kyrgyz National University of Zh. Balasagyn and Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan), the L.N.Gumilyov Eurasian National University (Kazakhstan). Together with French, Spanish and German universities TSU is offering PhD programmes.  

There are also exchange programmes for students within the Erasmus+ programme at TSU. Poland, Bulgaria, Sweden, Great Britain, Germany, Finland are partner countries.  Carrying out summer and winter schools became tradition for Tomsk State University.

the international winter school of intensive training of Russian for students from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; 

the international winter school of intensive training in Russian for students from University of Leeds, Great Britain; 

the IV International summer scientific and educational school "Environmental conditions and Habitats of Person in Arctic and Alpine Regions" for students from University of Sun Yat-sen, China.

Accommodation

Dormitories

All international students at TSU are provided with accommodation in “Parus” residence hall built in 2014. The residence hall is located within 5-10 minutes walking distance from TSU main campus. There is a number of fully equipped kitchens in the dormitory, two kitchens on each floor. Students are provided with a set of bed sheets and a towel when moving in the room. Each room has a bed, a side table, a desk, a chair and a wardrobe.
