NUST MISIS today is a dynamic scientific and educational centre attracting the best graduates, scientists and lecturers. The University specifically focuses on integrating science, education and innovations, as well as establishing a creative environment for unlocking the potential of every student.
By 2020, NUST MISIS intends to strengthen its leadership positions in a number of areas, including material sciences, metallurgy and mining, as well as strongly strengthen its presence in bio materials, nano- and IT-technologies.

The University has over 30 world-class scientific labs and 3 engineering centres, which employ the most prominent scientists of Russia and of the world. NUST MISIS successfully carries out joint projects with the largest Russian and foreign high-tech companies.
The University participates in four large-scale science projects of the MegaScience level: Horizon 2020, MoEDAL, LCHb, and SHiP. NUST MISIS tops the list of Project 5-100 universities in terms of the number of engineering and materials science publications in the first quartile journals, according to SNIP.
n 2018, NUST MISIS confirmed its position in the THE World University Rankings and entered the TOP-100 universities in countries with actively developing economies of the world, compiled by Times Higher Education. The university has shown significant growth in the QS World University Rankings and in the QS World University Rankings by Subject in three areas: “Materials Science”, “Physics”, “Mechanical Engineering”. NUST MISIS has also entered the ARWU-2018 Ranking and the TOP-100 of the ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects in two directions: Metallurgical Engineering and Mining & Mineral Engineering.
With its current Occupational Navigation Programme for attracting talented graduates and students from all over Russia, near- and far-abroad countries, NUST MISIS has rolled out the most successful enrolment campaign, which made it the 4thbest technical university in Russia in terms of enrolment quality. Students’ extra-curricular activities in various fields were marked with high state awards.
Together with its business partners and leading universities, NUST MISIS is working on multiple joint educational programmes. In 2015, NUST MISIS and seven other leading universities of Russia founded the National Open Education Platform.
Our university is comprised of 10 Colleges and 6 branches (the 4 of them are located in Russia and the 2 of them are abroad). The total number of NUST MISIS students prevails 20,000, 25% of them are international learners from 81 countries around the globe.
- College of Environmentally Sound Technologies & Engineering
The College of Environmentally Sound Technologies & Engineering was established on the basis of several faculties and united all of NUST MISIS’s metallurgical departments. Currently, the College`s main activities are research, design & experimental development, the creation of advanced technologies in the field of metallurgy, machine engineering & energy, and implementing these advances into enterprises. Special attention has been paid to the implementation of projects within public and private partnerships.
The College is connected with all kinds of economic activities linked with metals and their derivatives — from the processing of concentrates and ores to the processing of manmade secondary row materials with observance of all standards of technological and environmental safety. For many years the College has maintained a leading position in educational and research activities in the fields of materials technology, engineering equipment, technosphere safety, certification and metrology, and the artistic processing of materials. The interdisciplinary approach of its educational programs, research papers, and projects allow the College to combine the functions of seemingly different spheres to great effect.
Academic mobility programs allow the College to implement joint educational programs with many specialized European universities.
The College’s graduates successfully work for major domestic and international industrial enterprises, scientific-research and design institutes, research centers, analytical labs and consulting companies both in Russia and abroad.
- College of New Materials and Nanotechnologies
The NUST MISIS College of New Materials and Nanotechnologies was established as part of the University`s modernization structure held in 2009. Two departments with deep theoretical training of students — Physical Chemistry and the Faculty of Semiconductor Materials and Devices — served as the basis for the creation of College.
Its main directions of scientific activities correspond to the priority areas of science and technology approved by the Russian government. The College consists of 8 departments: Functional Systems & High-Temperature Materials, Materials Science of Semiconductors and Dielectrics, Metallurgical Science & the Physics of Strength, Semiconductor Electronics & the Physics of Semiconductors, Theoretical Physics, the Technology of Electronic Materials, Material Physics, and Physical Chemistry.
In addition to these departments, scientific work is concentrated in research laboratories and scientific & training centers. The College’s laboratories and centers are equipped with the latest equipment for the analysis of elemental and chemical composition, structure, electrophysical, and electro-optical properties at an atomic and electronic level. The unique equipment is used in the interests of the educational process that enables students to master cutting-edge research technologies. The College’s students actively participate in studies for the development of advanced materials and devices.
The College of New Materials and Nanotechnologies features the study of fundamental sciences: mathematics, physics, chemistry, physical chemistry, materials science, etc; solid theoretical and practical training happens in the field for the research & development of new materials based on metals, ceramics, semiconductor materials and dielectrics, so students need knowledge of information technologies, software engineering, and mathematical modeling. Economics & business, law, and foreign languages are also included in the curriculum for every specialization. NUST MISIS students have the opportunity to study on a dual degree master`s program in one of College`s foreign partner universities, as well as to do an internship abroad.
All these give the College’s graduates an opportunity to successfully work in various fields of production and business, easily adapting to new spheres of activities. The level of their knowledge allows them to take highly-paid positions in the fields of industrial and commercial management in the largest research and scientific & production centers and companies.
- College of Mining
The College of Mining became a part of NUST MISIS after the merger of two universities in 2014. It is one of the oldest institutes of higher education in the field of mining & engineering, and it traces its history back to 1918`s Moscow Mining Academy. For almost a century, the College has been one of the world`s scientific & educational centers training research and engineering personnel for the mining industry.
More than 50,000 engineers, over 4,000 Candidates of Sciences, and around 1,000 Doctors of Sciences have helped to make a huge contribution to the development of not only the Russian mining industry, but the mining industry of several countries over the course of the school’s existence. The highest level of professional training students from the NUST MISIS College of Mining receive is recognized on an international level. In March 2017 the QS World University Rankings by Subject: Engineering — Mineral & Mining, ranked NUST MISIS 30st overall in the subject.
Today, the College trains skilled personnel for the largest Russian and international companies engaged in the exploration, extraction, and processing of mineral resources. The College of Mining is comprised of 8 departments specializing in every activity area of mining enterprises.
The College also consists of several centers specializing in professional refreshment courses and the training of highly-qualified specialists (the Center for Strategic Management and Commodity Markets), the Laboratory of the Physics & Chemistry of Coal, and the Design & Expert Center.
- College of Economics & Industrial Management
The College trains economists and managers to have the highest qualification. Students get a progressive education in the field of engineering-economics, training which will become the foundation for their future career success.

To obtain a Bachelor`s degree in every area of studies takes 4 years, while it takesan additional 2 years to obtain a master`s degree and 3 years to get a PhD. The College’sadmission requirements are some of the highest for NUST MISIS applicants. Not only is a high score on the Unified State Exam for mathematics, Russian language, and social studies important, but also creative thinking and a desire to study.
The purpose of educational & research activities of the College is to give its future graduates a competitive advantage in the labor market. To be a specialist in the field of economics of industrial management means to have an in-demand profession. To be a specialist in the field of business organization and management means to be qualified in the field of innovations, which means to be able to create a company and run your own business. To be a specialist in the economic program of the SAP system and to have dozens of certificates from this program by the end of the course means to have a fantastic chance of getting a well-paid job.
- College of IT & Automated Control Systems
The College of IT & Automated Control Systems was established in 2010. The College is comprised of five departments: Automated Control Systems, Engineering Cybernetics, Computer-Aided Design, Automatization, Electrical Engineering and Information-Measuring Systems.
More than 1200 undergraduate and graduate students study at the College, and it also provides training for PhD students. The College teaches students about the actual modern conditions of the fields through cross-sectorial training programs. Students professionally master modern hardware and software, the theory and practice of information systems implementation, methods of mathematical modeling and data analyses, and application development tools.
During studies students do practical training in leading Russian and international companies. Starting from the 1st year of studies, they can participate in research and team competitions in collegiate programming. NUST MISIS alumni are able to conduct research in the field of Computer Science at a high professional level and to successfully solve practical and applied tasks in industry and business.
The College launched the Center “New Reality” to intensify students` participation in Olympiads and contests. It supervises students` performances in international and Russian competitions. The College teams annually get into the semi-finals of the world programming championships operating under ACM ICPC rules. In 2014, in the final ranking, one of the College teams took 19 th place in the world jointly with teams from MIT and Kyoto University, ahead of teams from the University of Cambridge, Stanford University, and ETH Zurich
In 2018 College team took 3th place in Global Final Huawei ICT Competition in Shenzhen China. The college received the “Best ICT Academy” award from Huawei.
- College of Basic Professional Studies
The College of Basic Professional Studies was founded in 2006. During the first two years of a student’s undergraduate time in this college, they will receive a basic education in general studies. Lecturers and senior students help newcomers to adapt to the education process regardless of their area of training and specialization. These mentors monitor academic progress and class attendance, as well as helping students to get accustomed to the university’s social sphere.
In addition to general education training, the College trains foreign language teachers and translators and implements master`s degree programs and programs for training educational research staff in postgraduate studies.
Today, the College is comprised of 6 departments that train students in mathematics, physics, general and inorganic chemistry, Russian and foreign languages, philosophical-historical and socio-legal sciences, and physical training. Also, 2 educational centers operate through the College.
The Department of Mathematics is one of the University’s oldest departments. Existing since 1933, it has played a key role in training 1st and 2nd year undergraduate and specialist program students. The groundwork for further STEM studies is laid after students master the following areas of mathematics: Mathematical Analysis, Differential Calculus, Analytical Geometry, the Theory of Probability, and Statistics.
In the Department of Physics — another basic discipline in undergraduate and specialist program training, 1st and 2nd year students study such modules of physics as Mechanics, Molecular Physics and Thermodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, Optics, and Atomic & Nuclear Physics. Starting in 2017, the Department has begun training master`s degree students in the field of Technical Physics. After graduating from the master`s degree program students can continue their education and obtain a PhD in the fields of Physics & Astronomy or Chemical Engineering.
The Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry trains first and second year students in the following disciplines: Chemistry, Organic chemistry, and the Chemical Basis of Production. The College trains postgraduate students in Chemistry.
The Department of Foreign Languages and Communication Technologies trains undergraduate and specialist programs students from their 1st to 4th year of studies. At the end of the 4th year of their English language studies, students take the IELTS exam—one of the most popular international exams. The exam results are accepted by universities in 120 countries worldwide. In addition, the department prepares students enrolled in the undergraduate program in Linguistics to become professional foreign language teachers and highly-qualified translators. The department also launched an international master`s degree program in Communications & International Public Relations.
The Department of Social Sciences and Technologies teaches social humanitarian disciplines: philosophy, history, personal efficiency, law, political science, history & the philosophy of science, sociology, cultural studies, psychology, logic, research methodology, and the pedagogy of higher education. Training is held for undergraduate, graduate, specialist, and postgraduate programs.
The Department of Physical Training offers students optional classes: football, basketball, volleyball, aerobics, swimming and general physical training, as well as classes in sports clubs, which engage students who wish to improve their sports skills. Our students typically perform well in the Olympic Games, and World, European, and Russian Championships.
The Russian Language Center provides training of Russian as a foreign language for international students at every level of education. International students have an opportunity for additional Russian language training as part of the general educational program, in both individual and group classes.
The Center for Regional Projects performs search and implementation of priority research and educational projects and programs on a regional level, which increase the University`s efficiency and competitiveness.
- College of Information Business Systems
NUST MISIS’s College of Information Business Systems was founded in 2008 by concluding a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and IBS. The College trains graduate students to become specialists in the fields of information systems and information technologies. The learning process involves recognized industry experts, business coaches, and key staff of partner-companies. Students take a project practical internship in major IT-companies with the opportunity for further employment.
The College is comprised of 3 departments:
The Department of System and Software Engineering provides graduate training in “Information systems and technologies”
The Department of Information Business Systems provides targeted student training in the field of information business systems at the request of IBS.
The Department of Enterprise Software Management provides targeted student training in the field of information business systems at the request of the Borlas Group.
The Department of Information Business Systems and the Department of Enterprise Software Management are extra budgetary graduate departments, each program of which is designed jointly with business customers to meet their requirements in the fields of IT-consulting and integrated solutions.
The College is a recognized center of competencies in the fields of system and software engineering, project management, big data analytics, the implementation of complex information systems based on integrated IT-solutions, and information support of complex objects’ life cycles. NUST MISIS’s College of Information Business Systems is the only College of its kind in Russia accredited by IPMA, as well as by the headquarters of the Youth Project Management Association SOVNET.
Graduate student training takes place in modern multimedia classrooms, and each student gets a personal laptop. Additionally, the best students receive scholarships. Students coming from all over Russia and abroad live in comfortable accommodations not far from the University.
The College’s graduates obtain a state master`s degree diploma in information systems and technologies, as well as a certificate of specialization in IPMA project management and vendor certificates (IBM, EMC, SAP, Oracle), which happen to have significant value in the labor market. This allows graduates to make quick career progress in the largest Russian and international IT-companies that utilize complex information systems.
- College of Lifelong Learning
The College of Lifelong Learning was established in 2009. Russian technological enterprises have a growing need for well-trained employees in management and production technologies to keep pace with the modernizing Russian economy. This need for continuous development spurred the further need for unique educational services on innovative technologies in production, management, and education. This was why the College was established.
he College of Lifelong Learning runs high-quality professional training for people with higher or secondary vocational education in regards to NUST MISIS’s basic educational programs. The College trains correspondent undergraduate and graduate students, and also runs refresher courses and professional retrainings. The College`s permanent long-term partners are the largest dynamically developing companies in Russia and the CIS, such as Severstal, Novolipetsk Steel, Nornickel, OMK, Rusal, Kazakhmys, Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling Plant, and others. In addition to the mining & metallurgical complex, the College has long-standing partnerships with companies operating in the energy sector, electronics industry, machine engineering, automotive, and other high-tech industries.
- College of Quality Assurance in Higher Education
College of Quality in Higher Education was established in February 2011 on the basis State Scientific Institution “Research Center for Problems of Training Quality” which had existed since 1986.
Objectives of IKVO:
- Meet the needs of the national high school in the conduct and coordination of systematic research, design and implementation works on topical issues of the quality of education;
- Provide the lifelong learning, including training of the teaching staff and managers of vocational education in Russia;
- Ensure the dissemination in the national high school of excellence of MISIS educational and methodical work and other leading universities in addressing the key issues to improve the quality of higher education.
Main Paths of Activities:
- Implementation of innovative training programs and workshops for the educational community with the participation of leading Russian and world experts in the fields of vocational education and heads of federal executive bodies
- Performance of research and design work in the field of quality in higher education within the framework of federal and departmental programs

The Commune House is located in the heart of Moscow - 15 minutes walking distance from the academic buildings. The «Metallurgist» is located next to the metro station, and in just 20 minutes by metro to academic buildings. 2-4 people live in one room. There are campuses for post-graduate students, and for master`s degree students (2-3 students), campuses for bachelor`s and specialist`s degree students (3-4 students).There is a kitchen on each floor; fridges are in rooms. The university provides students with bedclothes, mattress, all necessary furniture (bed, bedside table, desk, chair, wardrobe, shelf). All campuses offer free long range WiFi.
