Kazan National Research Technical University named after A.N. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
Kazan Aviation Institute (KAI) was established on the basis of the Aerodynamics Department of Kazan State University by the decision of the Head Department for Aviation Industry of the People’s Commissariat for Heavy Industry on the 5th of March, 1932.
In the beginning, the Institute consisted of two Departments, the Aerodynamics and Aircraft ones, which served as the basis for the official opening of the Aircraft Manufacturing Faculty in 1934.
Since 1933, KAI was one of the first Aviation Higher Education Institutions that started to publish collected scientific articles named as “KAI Research Papers”. They were regularly published and considered reputable scientific publications. Along with theoretical research, the Institute successfully developed engineering designs. In 1933-1939, a series of single- and twin-engine airplanes was created at KAI Experimental Design Bureau. They embodied ideas and design solutions which were new for that time (differential ailerons, retractable landing wheels, a flexible wing, etc.). A range of official records had been set with these aircrafts.
In the mid-50s, the following scientific schools had gained their full capacity and All-Union prominence: dynamic stability, aviation structural strength, optimal processes, aircraft engine building, progressive technological processes, etc. Their significance was recognized by establishing in 1956 the Council for the Doctor of Science Academic Degree Conferment at KAI.
In 1967, the Institute was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in recognition of its services for training engineers and research development.
In 1992, Kazan Aviation Institute was transformed into Kazan State Technical University. When it had become a technical university, KAI significantly extended a range of fields and programs of higher education.
In the same year, the Center for Continuing Education (CCE) was created with A.K. Vatolin as its first director. The CCE embraces the Institute for Professional Development and Teaching Staff Retraining that was established in 1994 with D.K. Sabirova as its first director; the Faculty of Pre-University Training that was created in 1989 with M.Y. Odinokov as its first director; 25 centers and 4 training groups. Professional development is carried out on 63 programs, second higher education is delivered with 9 programs.
Scientific potential of the university is represented by 58 chairs, 57 applied and basic research laboratories, 10 scientific and technical centers, 3 university-based research institutes, experimental and pilot production. The university employs over 3,000 lecturers, researchers and engineers, including more than 120 Science Doctors and Professors, 17 academicians and corresponding members of Russian Academy of Sciences, Tatarstan Academy of Sciences and International Higher School Academy of Sciences, over 700 Science Doctors and Candidates.
As of today, Kazan National Research Technical University is a large multi-branch training and research complex. It has 11 branches in the cities of Tatarstan and the Volga Region: Volzhsk, Almetyevsk, Bugulma, Zelenodolsk, Elabuga, Naberezhnye Chelny, Chistopol, Nizhnekamsk, Zainsk, Leninogorsk, Vyatskiye Polyany. Around 15,000 students are trained at all faculties and branches of KNRTU-KAI.
In 2009 the University participated in the ‘National Research University’ project and won in a competitive selection among top 30 universities of the Russian Federation.
International relations of KNRTU-KAI began in 1937 when a group of lecturers and members of KAI Experimental Design Bureau traveled to France to become acquainted with production at Renault aircraft factories. From 1947 to 1955, foreign students and postgraduates from Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, China, North Korea, Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia studied at KAI. Students from Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Korea, India, Pakistan, China, Palestine, Libya, Germany and the USA have been educated for decades at the University. Since then, educational and scientific ties have been successfully developed with universities of Brazil, Germany, Spain, Chine, Libya, the USA, France and other countries.

“KAI-Olymp” Sports and Leisure Complex
“KAI-Olymp” is one of the largest sports facilities of Kazan and Russia. It was built as part of “KAI-Grad” for the coming Universiade-2013. “KAI-Olymp” is ranked among the 5 best sports complexes of Russia.
It is comprised of:
- a universal sports hall (4 000 sqm) opened in 2007 including a cross-functional hall of 32x48m.,
- a gym of 500 sqm,
- a martial art gym with a ring of 18x24 m,
- a football stadium with 1500-supporter grand stands.
University teams on indoor soccer, handball and boxing are currently trained at the Universal sports hall.
An indoor swimming pool opened in May 2010 with an area of 11000 sqm is one of the best swimming pools in Europe. Its swimming bath is 50x25 m. There are also a multi-functional hall of 840 sqm, a “dry-swimming” hall of 240 sqm and a gym of 220 sqm with a sauna. The swimming-pool is equipped with up-to-date engineering and sports facilities which provide opportunities to hold competitions on a higher level. University teams on basketball, volleyball, karate and water polo are presently trained in the building.
The Aeromodelling Laboratory was set up in 1948. The history of the Laboratory abounds in many sports results and achievements. In 1949, in a year’s time after its creation, the first world record on a gyroplane’s control-line model was set by L.V. Murychev, the first Head of the Laboratory. During the years of the lab’s existence aeromodellers set 28 world records and 42 All-Union records. There were also 6 Masters of Sports of an international level and 32 Masters of Sports trained at the lab during this period.
In 1977 the KAI Aeromodelling Laboratory was conferred the Y. Gagarin Diploma, the top reward of the Aeromodelling Sports Federation. A. Andryukov, a KAI graduate, became a two-times champion of sports and a three-times champion of Europe in a class of rubber-motored models. The members of the Russian National Team A. Smolentsev, A. Burdov, V. Polyaev are currently trained at the laboratory. They are Masters of Sports of an international level, multiple champions of Russia and winners of international competitions. They also train young sportsmen in their model classes and successfully share the obtained experience with them. Present-day aeromodels go through 10-40-g loads, which is nearly impossible in major aviation. The fight for lightweight retaining while going through acceleration requires the application of state-of-the-art aviation techniques and materials. Different composites such as glass-fiber and carbon-fiber plastics, boron-fiber and organ-plastics have been introduced and successfully used at the Laboratory long ago. Theoretic surveys in this field are reflected in diploma- and term-papers, defended by aeromodellers, which are often considered most successful at the Institute and at the Faculty. Nowadays the Laboratory is the leading institution that applies such advanced materials. It coordinates the work of students, employees, pupils and amateur sportsmen in the following fields:
- Study of theoretical basics of flight operation and designing;
- Calculation and designing of models;
- Introducing new processing techniques and materials;
- Learning sports skills of controlling;
- Quality upgrading of models;
- Enhancement of aeromodelling sports skills;
- Achieving maximal results at Russian and international competitions.
KAI campus comprises seven dormitories, each of which accommodates up to 200 students, with a big number of international citizens residing there. They are located in close proximity to the university building, meaning that students spend very little time getting there. It is important to note that all dormitories are well-furnished and have all necessities required for comfortable stay like kitchens, laundry rooms, recreational spaces and other facilities. Additionally, local supermarkets, hairdressers, restaurants with both local and world cuisines are there in a walking distance.
Kazan is a city in the Russian Federation, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, a large harbor on the left bank of the Volga River where it meets the Kazanka River. It is one of the largest religious, economic, political, scientific, educational, cultural and sports centers of Russia. The Kazan Kremlin is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city has a registered brand-name of the “Third Capital of Russia”. Kazan celebrated its millennium in 2005.
Kazan is one of the most developed cities in Russia in terms of sports:
- 2011 – the European Championship in weightlifting;
- 2013 – the XXVII World Summer Universiade;
- 2014 – the World Championship in fencing;
- 2015 – the Aquatics World Championship;
- 2017-2018 – the FIFA Confederations Cup and FIFA World Cup.
In 2014, Kazan ranked 8th in the world and 3rd in Europe as the most rapidly developing tourist city according to the ratings of the website TripAdvisor. In 2015, Kazan was among the most popular top-three tourist destinations for celebrating New Year holidays. It also ranked 4th in the tourist rating of the most popular Russian cities (more than 2.1 million tourist visits).
Kazan is one of the oldest centers of Eurasian civilization on Earth, the city of unique monuments of the past which is famous for its traditions – academic, scientific and cultural. Many generations of great educators and poets, scientists and masters, heroes and commanders were born there. The history of Kazan-city is associated with the names and fates of such great people as G. Derzhavin, A. Pushkin, F. Shalyapin, L. Tolstoy, N. Lobachevskiy, G. Tukai and many others.
Kazan is truly a city of contrasts, “A meeting point of two worlds”, as Alexander Herzen, a renowned Russian publicist, writer and philosopher wrote. “And that is why Kazan has two origins: western and eastern ones, and you can meet them at each crossroad: here, because of continuous interaction, they were compressed, became good friends, and turned into something very original at its nature”.
Kazan has been an intermediary for trading between East and West since ancient times. Today it plays a major role in political, economic and international relations. The translation of Tatar qazan is a “boiler” or “cauldron”. The name itself is explained historically: the life of representatives of over 101 nationalities is literally boiling here. People of different religions and nationalities have learned to live in peace and harmony after getting over numerous historic periods in their development.
