Far Eastern Federal University  is a university located in Vladivostok, Primorsky Krai, Russia.

FEFU is the bearer of traditions of the Russian classical culture, science and education. Far Eastern Federal University has its origins in 1899 at the time when the Oriental Institute was founded in Vladivostok.
Today FEFU is the only classical university in Eastern Russia. In incorporates Schools with generations-old traditions and areas of research that form the core of our intellectual base.
FEFU was established in 1899 as the Eastern Institute (Восточный институт) as a higher education institution specializing in oriental studies and training for administrative, commercial and industrial institutions in the Far East. The university was reformed into State Far Eastern University (Государственный дальневосточный университет) by Far Eastern Republic authorities in 1920 during the Russian Civil War, until it was closed in the 1930s under Joseph Stalin. It was reinstated in 1956 as Far Eastern State University by the Council of Ministers of the USSR, two years after Nikita Khrushchev visited Vladivostok. In 2000, its English name was changed to Far Eastern National University, however the name in Russian remained unchanged and

references to the university under its old name were common. In 2008, the university was reformed again by presidential decree into its current form, officially changing the name to Far Eastern Federal University and a new purpose-built campus planned. The university was merged with the Far Eastern State Technical University (FESTU), Pacific State University of Economics (TSUE) and the Ussuriisk State Pedagogical Institute (USPI).

One of the FEFU’s advantages is its geographic location in the center of the Asia Pacific region, which is now one of the most dynamically developing parts of the world. This place is the second pole of a world civilization, which includes the leading counties of the globe, such as China, the United States, Japan, India and many world-famed metropolitan cities, such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney and Seoul.

The School was founded in 2018 as part of the ‘Digital Economy of the Russian Federation’ Program. The School prepares only masters in areas related to IT with an emphasis on applied research. Partners of the School are the largest national companies, which give students the opportunity to participate in the development and implementation of highly significant projects. In other words, the School of Data Economy is a diploma backed up with real portfolio cases.

  • School of Biomedicine

The School develops educational programs in medicine, biomedicine, pharmacy, biotechnical systems, nutritional and biological technologies. It strives to introduce the achievements of fundamental sciences into practical medicine, to develop translational medicine technologies, and to educate future leading specialists of biomedicine.

Since 2012, the School has provided a Masters Degree in Food and Beverage Science. It is taught entirely in English to mixed classes of Russian and international students. The program is focused on the biotechnology of alcoholic beverages and soft drinks. It involves enhanced study of the fundamentals of drink biotechnology, including biochemical, physical-chemical and electrochemical processes as well as the methods of their regulation. This degree includes the study of composition and properties of feedstock, modern methods of its processing, processes for basic and auxiliary products to manufacture various types of wine, brandy, liqueur, beer, and soft drinks, as well as the analyzing the creation of new kinds of beverages, methods of assessing their quality and safety, and their production organization and management. 

Using the herbs of the Far Eastern region for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage production is studied. Graduates of this program can work in national and international food industries related to quality assurance and control, process control and product development. The program also provides the competence required to undertake independent activities within public food control, administration and guidance on food policy, and to participate in scientific development work.

Biology: hydrobiology and ichthyology, developmental biology, cell biology, marine biodiversity, and environment conservation

Geography: nature management and protection

Informatics and computers: design, analysis and synthesis methods

Soil science: land classification and soil conservation

The School also has also Master’s degree programs in geology, ecology and nature management, biotechnology, and applied hydrometeorology.

Since 2012, a new Masters Degree Program in English is offered in Marine Biodiversity and Aquatic Environment Conservation. It is an interdisciplinary program taught by the faculty from several departments: Biodiversity and Marine Bioresources, Ecology, Cell Biology and Genetics, and Soil Science in association with professors from the Russian Academy of Sciences. The courses offered by the program cover various aspects of marine and fresh water biology: diversity of invertebrate animals and plants, processes and structure of marine ecosystems, soil formation in the sea and on shore, and impacts of the environment on cells, tissues and physiology of organisms. This program prepares professionals in biology and ecology to work in research and R&D institutions, innovative businesses specializing in this field and higher education institutions.

FEFU Hotel Complex at Russky Island offers students different accommodation options at the dormitory rooms where they can study, get rest and meet with their friends. 
Dormitory rooms have all the required furniture items already installed. Bedding items are given to the students at their check-in. Rooms are cleaned by maintainable personnel every week.  
Every floor of the each dormitory building has kitchen areas for students’ individual cooking with all the required kitchen equipment installed. Besides, the dormitory buildings are equipped with the laundry rooms for students’ individual washing.

Vladivostok, literally ‘ruler of the east’) is a city and the administrative centre of the Far Eastern Federal District and Primorsky Krai, Russia, located around the Golden Horn Bay, not far from Russia’s borders with China and North Korea. The population of the city as of 2019 was 605,049] up from 592,034 recorded in the 2010 Russian census. 

Vladivostok has a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate In winter, temperatures can drop below −20 °C (−4 °F) while mild spells of weather can raise daytime temperatures above freezing. The average monthly precipitation, mainly in the form of snow, is around 18.5 millimeters (0.73 in) from December to March. Snow is common during winter, but individual snowfalls are light, with a maximum snow depth of only 5 centimeters (2.0 in) in January. During winter, clear sunny days are common.

Summers are warm, humid and rainy, due to the East Asian monsoon. The warmest month is August, with an average temperature of +19.8 °C (67.6 °F). Vladivostok receives most of its precipitation during the summer months, and most summer days see some rainfall. Cloudy days are fairly common and because of the frequent rainfall, humidity is high, on average about 90% from June to August.



Maxim Gorky Academic Theatre, named after the Russian author Maxim Gorky, was founded in 1931 and is used for drama, musical and children’s theatre performances.

In September 2012, a granite statue of the actor Yul Brynner (1920–1985) was inaugurated in Yul Brynner Park, directly in front of the house where he was born at 15 Aleutskaya St.


The Arsenyev Primorye Museum (Приморский государственный объединенный музей имени В.К. Арсеньева), opened in 1890, is the main museum of the Primorsky Krai. Besides the main facility, it has three branches in Vladivostok itself (including Arsenyev’s Memorial House), and five branches elsewhere in the state. Among the items in the museum’s collection are the famous 15th-century Yongning Temple Steles from the lower Amur.


The city is home to the Vladivostok Pops Orchestra.

Russian rock band Mumiy Troll hails from Vladivostok and frequently puts on shows there. In addition, the city hosted the “VladiROCKstok” International Music Festival in September 1996. Hosted by the mayor and governor, and organized by two young American expatriates, the festival drew nearly 10,000 people and top-tier musical acts from St. Petersburg (Akvarium and DDT) and Seattle (Supersuckers, Goodness), as well as several leading local bands.

Nowadays there is another annual music festival in Vladivostok, Vladivostok Rocks International Music Festival and Conference (V-ROX). Vladivostok Rocks is a three-day open-air city festival and international conference for the music industry and contemporary cultural management. It offers the opportunity for aspiring artists and producers to gain exposure to new audiences and leading international professionals.

The Russian Opera House houses the State Primorsky Opera and Ballet Theater.
