NEFU ‘s total undergraduate student population number is about 17,650. More than 500 students are engaged in postgraduate work. North-Eastern Federal University trains more than 300 foreign students in major educational programs from such countries as China, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, etc.
1,601 academic staff are currently employed at the University. Of these 209 hold doctor’s degree, 845 candidate of science degree. 

The University occupies 40 buildings and 12 residence halls located mostly in the University campus. The accessible and convivial dimension of the campus makes students feel at home; international students are well integrated as it is easy to contact faculty, administration and other students. There are student canteens almost everywhere throughout the campus that propose different meals at an affordable price.

There are 1 500,000 books, periodicals and other items in the University Library. Computer stations make up the University’s library resources available to users throughout the campus. Moreover it has access to a reach database of electronic resources including both Russian and foreign periodicals (EBSCO, Science, JSTOR, Oxford University Press etc.) 

The University has Geology Field Station, Museum of Archeology and Ethnography, Botanical garden and Orangery open to staff and students’ research and study.

THE INSTITUTE OF HEALTH – The institute was established as a research institution – Institute of Health, by the Decree of the President of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) № 1265 of 25 December 1995. Academy of Sciences of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia),renamed the Institute to Federal State Scientific Institution “Institute of Health” onthe Order № 1007 by the Federal Education Agency of June 8, 2007. According to the Order № 157 by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, dated February 4, 2011 there was a merger between FSSI “Institute of Health” and the Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education “M. K. Ammosov North-Eastern Federal University” as a separate structural unit “Scientific Research Institute of Health”.

The Institute carries out research in the field of natural sciences and liberal arts.

 THE INSTITUTE OF APPLIED ECOLOGY OF THE NORTH. Institute of Applied Ecology of the North was opened in 1993 by the Decree of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences 03.02.1993 № 21. In order of the Academy of Sciences of Sakha (Yakutia ) of 08.11.1994 № 17 Institute of Applied Ecology of the North was admitted to the Academy of Sciences of Sakha (Yakutia). In order of the Government of the Russian Federation from May 8, 2007 № 575 the Institute was transferred to the Federal Agency for Education.

On the basis of the Order of the Ministry of Education 09.08.2011 number 155 was created a new separate division “Scientific Research Institute of Applied Ecology of the North”, of the Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education “M.K. THE INSTITUTE OF REGIONAL ECONOMY OF THE NORTH. Institute of Regional Economy of the North was and till this days continue to be the only academic institution in economics in the huge territory of the North Asian Russia from the North Urals to Kamchatka. It conducts basic and applied research on the socio-economic problems of the North on the example of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), and other regions of the North-East of Russia. THE INSTITUTE OF A.E. KULAKOVSKY. The Institute of A. E Kulakovsky (Eksekyulyah Elekseya) is a scientific and educational structural division of the Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education “M. K. Ammosov North- Eastern Federal University”.

The research unit was created at NEFU in 2010 on the basis of the research laboratory “Study of Artistic and Scientific Heritage of A. E Kulakovsky”. 

Research areas:

  1. Complex study of artistic and scientific heritage of A. E.Kulakovsky (1877-1926), a poet and scholar, researcher of culture, languages and folklore of the North-East of Russia, fundamental questions of social and economic problems of the early twentieth century.

Aims and objectives:

To publish A. E.Kulakovsky’s complete works in 9 vols. : comparative-historical study of the literary texts, their edits, their variations and dubia in aspects of a textual analysis (II vol.); preparation of authors’ texts from the scientific archives, their real-historical, textual scientific commentaries, composition of personalia ( III – V vol.); to organize and conduct regular scientific conferences, round tables, seminars on the heritage of A. E.Kulakovsky in the context of the Russian spiritual culture.

2.Problems of textology and literary criticism in the study of the Yakut literature history: fundamental and applied research of classical works and heritage by especially important authors, and the Yakut literary process in the perspective of the comparative literature issues.

Aims and objectives:

To perform scientific research and experimental development related to the genesis and formation of genres, artistic features of the national style, the transcultural model of author’s identity on the testsmaterials of the original texts in the Yakut and Russian languages.

THE INSTITUTE OF OLONKHO. Scientific Research Institute of Olonkho (SRI Olonkho) was created on November 17, 2010.

Today, the world’s only institute of Olonkho is imposed with an awesome responsibility for the development and dissemination of a scientific understanding of a universal nature of the Yakut epos Olonkho.It is the greatest monument of folklore, revealing the inner essence of a proud and independent spirit of the Sakha people in a vibrant art form; thereby they preserve their language and original spiritual culture for thousands years.

The Institute scientific activity consists of the following top areas:

  • Study of Olonkho’sorigin and development as a unique monument of folk wisdom and spiritual potential;
  • To translate the Yakut heroic epos into the languages of the peoples of the world;
  • Publication of the Yakut epos monuments;
  • To create the infrastructure of a common information and communication space for a preservation, study and dissemination of Olonkho.

The Institute of Olonkho as a coordinator of interdisciplinary research and study of the epic heritage can become the research center for a scientific and educational process of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) after reaching the goals.It will lead to a recognition of NEFU as the recognized center of the preservation, study and dissemination of the cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Northeast.

Mining Institute dates back to 1956, when a Mining Department was opened as a part of YSU Faculty of Engineering. The Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is the largest mining region in the northeastern Russia, there has been the training of Mining Engineers for 55 years at NEFU Faculty of Mining. The present and the future of the Republic is associated with the mining production and its refining. Our country is one of the main suppliers of diamonds, one of the largest miners of gold, mica, tin and coal. In the future, we expect to develop the new diamond deposits, the richest iron and apatite ores, construction and facing materials, and other minerals. The Faculty of Road Construction established on November 27, 2006. It was created by the Yakut road builders with the support of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Informatization of the Sakha Republic(Yakutia) on the basis of two departments: “Highways and Aerodromes” of the Engineering Faculty and “Engineering Science” of the Teacher Training Institute.

The purpose of the faculty was not only to train highly qualified personnel – engineers, road builders, mechanics, and teachers of automobile engineering. Yakut State University (YSU) was organized under the Order of the USSRMoscow Military District № 685 of 28 August 1956 from 1 September 1956,based on the Yakut Teachers College, pursuant to the Decree of the Council of Ministers № 1184 of 23 August 1956. Technical Faculty (TF) as a structural unit was a part of the University with five specialties, including “Geology and Mineral Deposits” and “Development of Mineral Deposits”.

Officially, the Geological Department opened on September 21, 1956. It had only one division- “Mineralogy and Petrology”.

The Faculty of Geology and Survey was formed in September 1983.

The mission of the Faculty of Geology and Survey is to provide a high quality of training of competitive specialists based on innovative educational technologies for the geological exploration industry of the Northeastern Russia.

Historical Department is the oldest educational division at the university. The first students of this branch were since the Teacher’s college opening in 1934.The faculty was transformed into the Faculty of History in 2000.

From the moment of the university opening, the faculty trains historians of a wide profile in following spheres: teachers at educational schools; employees in the state structures and scientific institutions. Outstanding scientific researchers, honored national teachers, writers, honored workers of culture and well-known sportsmen are the graduates of the Historical Faculty.
