Altai State Medical University is one of the most prestigious medical universities of the Russian Federation. The university is located in the city of Barnaul. Altai State Medical University was created in 1954 by the Government of the USSR as Altai Medical Institute. At the time ASMI became a solid foundation of excellence with higher medical education in the West Siberian region. In 1994 by the order of the Ministry of Health of Russian Federation, Altai State Medical Institute was renamed into the Altai State Medical University. Today, it is one of the leading higher medical educational institutions of Western Siberia. The university has all the medical specialties.
In 58 departments Altai State Medical University along with more than 4,000 students, the university has enrolled 180 interns, 300 residents and 100 graduate students. Altai State Medical University trains doctors not only for primary health care, but also for specialized medical centers and federal centers of high-tech care. Altai State Medical University employs more than 100 doctors and 350 candidates of sciences.
