Irkutsk State Medical University is a State Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education. Irkutsk State Medical University was opened on August 26, 1919, as a medical department of Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Irkutsk State University. In 1920 medical department became separate Medical Faculty of the Irkutsk State University. In the spring of 1930, the Medical Faculty of the Irkutsk State University became an independent institution (Irkutsk State Medical Institute). In 1952 Irkutsk State Medical Institute opened the dental

faculty, which was formed from the Irkutsk Dental Institute. In 1982 Irkutsk State Medical Institute opened the long-awaited pediatric faculty. In 1992, Irkutsk State Medical Institute has passed the state certification to assess the quality of training, conducted by the State Inspectorate. On May 1995 Irkutsk State Medical Institute received the university status. In the last 50 years, Irkutsk State Medical University has trained specialists for foreign countries. During this time Irkutsk State Medical University has produced significantly more than 500 doctors to 25 countries of the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. Irkutsk State Medical University conducts training in five specialties. Diploma/Degree of Irkutsk Medical University is entitled to medical activities in 35 countries. Today Irkutsk State Medical University conducts training in 63 departments by highly professional teaching staff, including 100 doctors and 364 candidates of sciences. Till now Irkutsk State Medical University has trained around 11000 students.

Faculties

 GENERAL MEDICINE FACULTY

 General Medicine Faculty was found in 1919, constituting a part of physics and mathematics faculty of Irkutsk State University. In 1920 it was decided to create a separate faculty. The department was based on the organization of on-site and off-site studies, sanitation, hygiene, and pediatric faculties.

Nowadays, the educational process at the “General Medicine” faculty is being carried out at 58 faculties. Also, the faculty consists of 20 departments, where are working 35 professors, 39 assistant professors, and 200 assistants and professors. The faculty has full-time and part-time forms of study. The amount of budget places at a full-time form of study is 135, while at part-time form – 40 places.

On completion of a course, the graduates receive “Doctor of Medicine” qualification (“General Medicine” specialty).

The faculty trains qualified specialists who can apply their knowledge in any medical sphere. Besides, such new specialties as “General Practitioner” (Family Doctor) are being developed. Faculty graduates have the right to work as managers of medical and organizational in medical units. Due to the high demand for the medical personnel, graduates are being looked for not only in medical establishments of the Irkutsk region but also far beyond the city.

Spheres of professional activities of medical faculty graduates are presented by the Governing bodies of medical and therapeutic services, various medical institutions of different levels and research institutions.

Being graduated with a degree of “doctor of the general medicine”, alumni are prepared solve different issues: working at the health care institutions, prevention and early detection of various diseases, provision of a qualified routine and emergency care, skills of determining the clinical diagnosis and the further treatment, engaging in scientific activities.
Enrollment status: a full-time form of studying, duration – 6 years, part-time – 7 years. After that, a graduate has to take an internship or clinical residency studies to obtain a specialist certificate. Those who intend to take up scientific activities of a clinical course are eligible to enter a Ph.D. program to write a thesis.

 Educational process of the students majoring in “General Medicine” is conducted in accordance with the federal state educational standards. All students take session twice a year. On successful completion of the final state examination, a graduate receives his/her medical degree on 6 or 7 year of studying. During the whole period of studying, the student has a possibility to take up scientific researching work at the Scientific Foundation of Young Scientists and Students in any specialty. Annually, many of interregional and all-Russian student competitions on therapy, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology are held.
The university has a well-organized sport base along with the recreation camp. Also, there is a wide choice of activities: wit and humor competitions, vocal and music contests, beauty contests and other numerous entertainments. Broad international activity of the university provides an opportunity not only to learn foreign languages but also to take part in various internship programs in France, Germany, India, China, Mongolia, and Korea.
Student government is presented by the faculty monitors and students’ coordinating council. Students are able not only to solve their own issues, but also participate in the life of city and region student groups, cooperating with the university administration.
The process of education in the university is provided by the qualified personnel. The surgical departments are top-heavy with a corresponding member of AMS RF, 3 professors, 12 assistant professors; the obstetrics and gynecology departments are presented by 3 professors and assistant professors. At the department of general medicine is functioning the best students’ scientific circle.
Faculty’s personnel, in addition to educational activities, is working through scientific research on modern medicine features. Professor Grigoriev. E.G., head of the hospital surgery department, runs the Institute of Reconstructive and Restorative Surgery (Academy of Medical Sciences of the Russian Federation), being a chief surgeon of the Federal District. Almost all the major service areas of the city and region are led by the faculty’s personnel.

 FACULTY OF PEDIATRICS

 In 1982, at Irkutsk State Medical University the Faculty of Pediatrics has started its work.

After completing the course a graduate receives medical doctor qualification, majoring in “Pediatrics”.
The faculty prepares students to work in such spheres of healthcare as pediatricians, pediatric

surgeons and neonatologists.

Maintaining the health of children and adolescents at a high level is an essential part of the further Russian social and economic growth, that’s why our professionals will always remain in demand.

Professional areas of pediatrics faculty graduates are children’s hospitals, health resorts, schools and pre-schools (kindergartens and day nurseries), research institutions of general medicine and pediatrics profiles.

The graduates majoring in “Pediatrics” have all the necessary skills to work in solving the following issues: healthcare institutions and organizations, mastering in clinical and epidemiological diagnosing, treatment and diagnostics proficiency, provision of medical care at the health clinic stage, provision emergency medical care and prevention of particular diseases, educational initiatives.

Enrollment status of the studies is full-time education, duration of the course – 6 years and 2 years of residency or 1 year of internship.

Major specialties that are available for the further occupation by the graduates of “Pediatrics” faculty are the following: pediatrician, pediatric surgeon, neonatologist, pediatric oncologist, pediatric endocrinologist, a pediatric urologist, and andrologist, a pediatric cardiologist. The last four specialties require in-depth preparing after receiving the primary pediatric specialization certificate or the pediatric surgeon.

The educational process at the faculty of pediatrics is carried out in accordance with the state standards and is based on the following system: general education, biomedical and clinical disciplines. Herein, students who are studying at the pediatrics should possess profound knowledge of the age peculiarities concerning children and adolescents, that’s why at the theoretical departments they study specialized disciplines. Qualified professional training carried out by the faculty is provided by the operational excellence of the higher-education teaching personnel. At the profession-oriented faculty works 7 professors and doctors of science, and the overall rate of academics with a doctorate or Ph.D. degree comprises 90%. Over the years, the main scientific approach of the profession-oriented departments remains “Health protection for mother and child in the region of the Eastern Siberia”. Research activities are being conducted in collaboration with the East-Siberian scientific and medical center of the SB RAMS, the Research Institute of Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Russia, the Russian Center of Perinatology, Obstetrics, and Gynecology of the RAMS. Also, many of scientific programs are being realized in collaboration with the International Academy of Man and Nature Safety, the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, the Russian Association of Perinatal Medicine, the Association of Pediatric Anaesthetists of Japan, the Universities of Grenoble (France) and Connecticut (USA).

On completing the course of Pediatrics, the students can get a second medical degree majoring in “General Medicine”, “Public Health”, eliminating the academic curriculum difference.
There is an important point for student and their parents to know about the high demand for pediatricians. The need in such specialists in several exceeds the number of graduates of the Faculty of Pediatrics.

 FACULTY OF DENTISTRY

 Faculty of Dentistry of Irkutsk State Medical University was opened in 1936.
After the graduation from the Medical University, the student receives a medical doctor qualification, majoring in “Dentistry”.

The faculty of Irkutsk State Medical University prepares students to work in such a sphere of healthcare as dentistry, providing further opportunity to work in dental clinics.
A graduate, after completion of the compulsory internship program majoring in “Dentistry”, can work as a general practice dentist. After the completion of the internship, a graduate can continue his/her education at the residency and get one of the following degrees: dentist-therapist, dentist-surgeon, dentist-orthopedist, dentist-orthodontist, a pediatric dentist.
The enrollment status includes full-time studies, the duration of which is 5 years plus 1 year of internship. The educational process at the faculty of dentistry is carried out in accordance with state standards and is based on the following system: general education, biomedical and clinical disciplines.
Qualified professional training carried out by the faculty is provided by the operational excellence of the higher-education teaching personnel. At the dentistry faculty of Irkutsk State, Medical University works 12 professors and academics, the overall rate of candidate and doctor of science degrees comprises 90%.

  FACULTY OF PHARMACY

 The Faculty of Pharmacy of Irkutsk State Medical University has started its work in 1941.
After the graduation from the Medical University, the student receives a pharmacist qualification, majoring in Pharmacy. The faculty of ISMU prepares pharmaceutical sales representative for a further active and creative professional career that presupposes research, development, production, packaging, storage, transportation, state registration, certification, standardization and quality control, sales, advertising, use and destruction of drugs (in case they got out of order).

Professional spheres where the pharmacy faculty graduates are needed: production (pharmacies, pharmaceutical factories, chemical, and pharmaceutical plants); organizational-administrative; control and licensing (licensing, certification, registration; general pharmaceutical practice (small retail pharmacy chain); awareness-raising, educational and researching activities.

The graduated pharmacist is prepared to solve the following issues:

• development, testing, and registration of the medical products, optimization of the existing drugs in correspondence with modern technologies, biopharmaceuticeutical research and methods of control according to the international requirements and standards system;
• production of medical substances and drugs by the pharmaceutical companies (pharmacies, factories), including organization of the technological process, selection of the technical equipment, provision of proper storage conditions; carrying out professional activities in the control and licensing field;
• organization and realization of blanks, acceptance of medical plants, determination of the resources of wild medical plants; quality control of medicines and medical plants in the stages of its development, acquisition, use, and storage;
• developing of standard documentation regulating the terms, technology, quality control, and storage of drugs;
• management of the pharmaceutical institution, including the organization of the management process in the main links of the pharmaceutical market;
• management of the pharmaceutical enterprises, the realization of their functioning, main indicators planning and development of the activity approaches;
• setting up the management and financial audit, conducting of market and pharmaceutical products researches;
• providing consultations to the experts of medical and pharmaceutical institutions and average people concerning features of using the medicines;
• carrying out chemical and toxicological testing;
• organization and realization of medical provision and pre-hospital medical care to the patients and injured in extreme situations;
• conducting educational, vocational and scientific work in the areas mentioned above.

The enrollment status includes the full-time presence, duration of the course consists of 5 years plus 1 year of internship.

The graduates of the specialty “Pharmacy” can work in the following areas:

– Management and economics of pharmacy;

– Pharmaceutical technologies

– Pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacognosy.

 

The educational process of the students at “Pharmacy” faculty is conducted in accordance with the state standards, basing on the following system:

– General, humanities and socio-economical courses;

– General natural courses;

– Specific courses;

– Electives.

 

The following educational and traineeship programs are incorporated and conducted in the course of professional-oriented courses: pharmacies, chemical, and pharmaceutical plants cultivating medicinal plants (farms).

Qualified professional training of the pharmacists is provided by the operational excellence of the higher-education teaching personnel. About 80% of the personnel is comprised of a Doctor or Ph.D. degree.

The graduates from the faculty of “Pharmacy” of Irkutsk State Medical University work in pharmacies, wholesale and retail companies, centers of quality control and standardization of drugs, pharmaceutical factories, administrative bodies of the manufacturing associations “Pharmacy”, and also on the positions of clinical pharmacologist or forensic expert.
Attention must be drawn to the fact that in recent years the pharmacy chain has expanded considerably, and the need in pharmaceutical sales representatives far exceeds the number of the graduates.

 FACULTY OF NURSING

The Institute of Nursing Education combines the history of Medical College and Higher Nursing Education Department of the Irkutsk State Medical University.

In 1952, Minister of Health of RSFSR Kovrigina M.D. encharged the chief doctor of clinics department of Irkutsk State Medical University, S. I. Goizner, to organize a school where 30 persons should have been gathered in 2 groups. They were studying nursing education. Thus, in Irkutsk a new education institution was established – “The Nursing School”, and already in 1955, a new medical college was opened. It was headed by S. I. Goizner.

In 2002, in the Medical College, a new “Laboratory Diagnosis” department was organized, which aimed to train laboratory technicians to work in diagnostic laboratories of various medical institutions.

The history of the Institution of Nursing Education takes its roots back to 2004 when the first recruitment to the “Health Management and Medical Law” was conducted.
At the “Nursing” specialty are held various higher education training programs, providing “Manager” qualification. The aim of the university staff is to create qualified nursing personnel with professional competence in the field of management and psycho-pedagogical activities.

  ACCOMMODATION

Students are offered to live in well heated and fully furnished comfortable rooms. Accommodation facilities for students are organized on the sharing basis. There are twin – and triple – rooms. Male and female students live separately on the different floors. All the hostels for students are protected by the police. There are special rooms for students where they can socialize, have fun and make new friends. All the rooms are provided with a bed, mattress, pillow, blanket, desk, chair, heater, and lighting, suitable for both: study and relaxation, as well as the Internet access and telephone for students to get in touch with their close friends and relatives.
