Izhevsk State Technical University

Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University was founded in 1952.
The university accepts students for bachelor degree in 47 programs, for master degree – in 37 programs, and for engineer degree – in 7 specialties in the field of mechanical and instrumentation engineering, civil and power engineering, housing and utility infrastructure, information science and computer engineering, natural sciences, economics, architecture and design, humanities.

More than 12,000 students, including 275 international, study at 3 faculties and 7 institutes of the university.

Campus

The university campus is located in picturesque outskirts of Izhvesk near the park and forestry area. It comprises 8 educational buildings, 6 students’ hostels, student palace «Integral», health center, polyclinic, stadium, swimming pool, etc.

Accommodation

The students live in comfortable hostels with cooking and laundry facilities, where they can work in computer rooms, as well as relax after studies. The international students are mainly accommodated in hostel 6. The accommodation cost varies within 20-80 USD/month, depending on the living conditions.

Meals

The meals can be taken in café «Shpargalka» («cheat note» in English), which is very popular among the students. The prices are quite democratic here, thus, the lunch price varies within 1.5-2 USD. Also, there a newly open café «Zachetka» («student’s record book» in English) in building 1, as well as snack bars in all educational buildings. The students can also cook their meals in the hostels.

Health

Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University provides vast opportunities to improve health. Health services for students and employees are provided by the university polyclinic and health center located on campus.

Sport

Kalashnikov ISTU has all the necessary sport facilities for students and employees: sport halls, a tennis court, a stadium with artificial covering, a ski center, gyms, aerobics halls, a swimming pool and a sauna. Sport days and various competitions form an integral part of students’ life. There is also a sport center «Galevo» located in the pine forest outside Izhevsk on the bank of the river Kama with the canteen providing 3 meals a day, sport grounds for football, volleyball, basketball and badminton, as well as a sauna.

Safety

The safety of international students of Kalashnikov ISTU is provided by Department of Complex Safety. Its personnel supervised by Vice-Rector for Security and Regime arrange and conduct meetings with international students on safe stay on the territory of the Russian Federation with the participation of representatives of Department of Internal Affairs, acquaint them with the rules of accommodation in the hostel and campus. The pass entry system to the university objects has been introduced. Currently, hostel 6 is equipped with retina scanner entrance system, thus, providing additional security for international students. The campus territory is safeguarded by representatives of police, student security squad «Rys» («lynx» in English) and Department of Complex Safety. All buildings and hostels on campus are equipped with automatic fire alarm systems, fire extinguishers and smoke ventilation systems. Besides, all university buildings and hostels are equipped with video surveillance systems.

About Izhevsk

Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University is situated in Izhevsk –- a large industrial, cultural and research center. It is the capital of the Udmurt Republic, situated in the European part of Russia between the Volga River and the Ural Mountains, with the population over 630,000 people. The distance between Izhevsk and Moscow, the capital of the Russian Federation, is 1,129 km.

The city has the developed market infrastructure, modern system of transport communications:
railway junction, airport and automobile arterial roads.

Izhevsk was founded in 1760 and celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2010.From its very beginning till present time the industry of Izhevsk has been focused on defense arms production. By the middle of 19th century the city turned into an important industrial center of pre-Urals region and produced high quality steel, arms, hunting guns and rifles of different kinds.

During the 2nd World War Izhevsk became famous as a small arms producer. After the war the plants and factories of Izhevsk began to produce Kalashnikov automatic machine-guns. Its legendary designer, Lieutenant-General Mikhail Kalashnikov is an Honorary Citizen of Izhevsk and an Honorary Professor of Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University.

Currently the industrial complex of Izhevsk is presented by 50 large enterprises producing equipment for fuel and energy complex and agrarian-industrial complex, machinery with digital program control, reducing transmissions, bearings, cars, all types of rifles, metal and metal-roll, complex systems of space communication and electronic equipment, medical and domestic devices, plastic articles, military equipment and many other types of products.

Izhevsk is known for its great educational, intellectual and research potential. Scientific investigations in the fields of physics, economics, environment, land tenure and development of the social sphere of the city are conducted in 23 scientific centers of institutions and universities. The professional training of specialists is held by 4 state universities and their 6 branches, 5 private universities and branches, and 17 secondary professional schools.

A modern system of medical services is established in Izhevsk: cardiologic clinic, center of neurosurgery, ophthalmology and prenatal care are in the list of the leading centers of the Russian Federation.
In the area of Izhevsk there are over 850 sport facilities, including stadiums, sport complexes and gyms, swimming pools and a modern biathlon complex. Different international competitions are held in Izhevsk. Names of Izhevsk athletes are well-known all over the world – Galina Kulakova, Tamara Tikhonova, Valery Medvetsev, Ivan Cherezov, Alexey Chizhov and many others.

Izhevsk has a rich cultural life: 5 theaters, a philharmonic, 10 palaces of culture, 25 city libraries, 13 art schools for children, 8 cinemas, 7 museums and galleries, an ice place, a circus and a zoo are functioning here.

Since 1991 Izhevsk is open for foreign contacts. The city has officially established twinning relations with Tatabanya (Hungary), Bedzin (Poland), Yambol (Bulgaria), Xining (China) and Marakay (Venezuela).
