The History of Kirov State Medical University starts on the 2nd of August, 1987, when by the order of the Ministry Council of the USSR an affiliate of Perm State Medical Institute was founded in Kirov. The resolution of creating the branch was carried after a working visit of a government commission headed by the Minister of Healthcare of RSFSR A.I. Potapov and the rector of Perm SMI E.A. Vagner in Kirov. Thanks to the great support of the first secretary of Kirov Regional Committee of Communist Party of Soviet Union V.V. Bakatin and the head of regional healthcare department G.F. Shulyatiev the affiliate was given a number of buildings for the placement of theoretical and biology departments, administrative and utility services.
In 2004 a 8-storey academic building with spacious lecture halls, cozy rooms and modern laboratories was finished. The rectorate, deans offices and academic departments were settled there. Three comfortable dormitories were built for foreign students. The resource base firmed up, new laboratories with modern equipment were created, a high-qualified lecturing staff was formed.

In September, 2004 prof. I.V. Sheshunov M.D., who is currently the head of the Academy, was elected, and in 2007 reelected the rector of the Academy. Nowadays Kirov SMU is a modern, rapidly developing educational facility, effectively integrating scientific, educational and medical activities. It is the biggest scientific, educational and medical complex in Kirov region, it is a high-skilled staff of lecturers, scientists and doctors.
Material and technical basis is constantly being renewed. The students learn in well-equipped lecture halls, computer classrooms, equipped with up-to-date hardware. The science library of the University has a book stock of more than 200 000 items, educational media-library and an electronic database. Manipulative skills center helps students sharpen their skills of doing injections, CPR and many other procedures. Non-resident students of Kirov SMU live in 3 comfortable dormitories. In December 2018, a new 15-storey students’ hostel will be finished. The University has its own food production facility and a printing office with modern equipment.
The University cooperates with many regional and municipal medical institutions in Kirov. The University has its own clinic, which includes therapeutic and neurological station with 100 beds and a diagnostic center. The clinic and the polyclinic are supplied with modern equipment. Patients’ rooms, laboratories and procedure rooms are renovated according to modern standards.

Kirov SMU constantly broadens its “geographical boundaries”. Students from different regions of the Russian Federation and Commonwealth of Independent States study there: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. There are also students from far abroad countries, such as: Sudan, Vietnam, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Ghana, DR Congo, Uganda, Nigeria, Mali and Tunisia.
