Institute of Biology, Ecology and Agricultural Technologies
Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Mining and Geology
The Institute trains specialists in the fields of natural sciences (chemistry, physics, geology, mathematics), biological and ecological sciences (botany, zoology, ecology, biochemistry, molecular biology, geography etc) and humanities (history, foreign languages, psychology, education etc).
The research activities of the Institute are diverse and varied. They focus on the exploration of flora and fauna of the European North, assessment of land and water ecosystems, and forecasting of the surrounding environment in the context of anthropogenic influences and mechanisms of adaptation of organisms to extreme factors.
The Institute maintains two biological stations, a botanical garden, herbarium, the Laboratory of Environmental Problems of the North, and the Laboratory of Functional Ecology. This is the only institute in Northwest Russia that trains specialists in the fields of agriculture, fish farming, agribusiness, as well as mechanical engineering in the respective field. Students have an opportunity to study on the university’s premises, as well as on the premises of technical schools in Petrozavodsk, thus getting extensive training and practical experience for their future career.
Academic activity focuses on studying flora and fauna of the European North, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and predicting environmental changes as a consequence of human impact. The institute undertakes research activities in the areas of plants’ and animals’ disease resistance, feed production and animal breeding, as well as implements projects in the areas of dairy cattle breeding, feed production and agroecology.
Institute of Mathematics and Information Technologies|Faculty of Mathematics and IT
Institute of Mathematics and Information Technologies trains specialists in the areas of mathematics and computer science, as well as business informatics. Students get vast theoretical and applied knowledge and are able to work both in academic and applied spheres.
Students of the Institute conduct dynamic science and research work and represent Karelia every year at conferences, exhibitions, academic competitions, and championships. PetrSU is the leading international school in the training of programmers.
The Department of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics has the Programmers’ Club founded and headed by Professor Vladimir Kuznetsov. The participants of the club, among whom are university and school students, study mathematical modeling, optimization, theories of algorithms and programming, and participate in city and region-wide programming competitions. Select teams of university and school students successfully participate in competitions within the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest.
Institute of Physics and Technology
Faculty of Physics and Technology
More than 900 students study on 4 BA programs and 1 MA programs offered by the Institute of Physics and Technology. Studies and research are conducted in new buildings, fitted with the latest educational and scientific equipment. IT-technologies are not only studied but also widely used in the educational process as a tool for communication and learning. Students have access to a library, computer classes, cafeteria, and a swimming pool.
15 research laboratories operate on the Institute’s premises, allowing students and professors to conduct their research projects and experiments. The most successful students win various grants and scholarships, take part in international projects and become fellows of various Russian and international funds.
Upon graduation, students can work at various companies and research centers in Russia and other countries, as well as teach at schools and universities since they get teacher and psychological training as well.
Institute of Philology
Faculty of Philology
The Institute of Philology is widely known for its research activities in the sphere of linguistic folklore studies, historical poetics, comparative studies, as well as the studies of ancient and Christian traditions in the Russian literature, works of Pushkin and Dostoevsky, comparative analysis of folklore and science fiction, children’s literature and Finnish literature. Students have a unique opportunity to learn the languages of indigenous people in Karelia – Vepsian, and Karelian. Numerous monographs and scientific works have been published since the establishment of the Institute by its staff and students.
Despite its classical origin, the Institute widely incorporates information technologies into the learning process. The Institute of Philology has an online laboratory, in which professional databases are being created.

Institute of Economics and Law

The Institute has developed effective educational programs and trains specialists in the areas of economics, management, and law. Graduates are able to apply their knowledge in various companies, legal offices and bodies of the government in the region, as well as do scientific work and carry out their own research projects.
The Institute’s faculty and postgraduate students conduct their research for regional companies, as well as collaborate with the Institute of Economics of the Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the area of economic studies.
The Institute has its own library with a wide range of legal literature, a legal clinic, a forensic office, an environmental law center, the center for comparative public law studies, as well as a postgraduate department.
Students obtain profound skills of lawyer practice in the “legal clinic” created at the Institute with the help of experts and professors from Vermont Law School (USA).
Hostel
PetrSU has 11 student dormitories. Students usually live in a dormitory, which is the nearest to their Institute. Each dormitory has an internet connection and recreation hall; many dormitories have their own gyms and other sports facilities.
There are 2 or 3 students in a room and bathrooms and kitchens on each floor. Petrozavodsk has a well-developed public transport system, so you can get anywhere you want from each dormitory building.
Dormitory cost is 300 – 600 RUB per month.
You can also rent an apartment for about 10 000 – 15 000 RUB a month.
City
The origin of Petrozavodsk is connected with construction of a gun plant by decree of Peter I near the Lososinka River, on the shores of Lake Onega, in 1703. By 1717, about 3,000 people lived around the plant in a settlement called Petrozavodskaya sloboda (village).
Under the Köppen climate classification, Petrozavodsk experiences a subarctic climate (Dfc), though unlike most localities with this type of climate there is no permafrost and relatively moderate temperatures thanks to the moderating influence of the Baltic Sea and the many nearby lakes. Winters, though long and cold, are mild for the high latitude, while summers are short and warm. Precipitation averages 611 millimetres or 24.06 inches annually.
Petrozavodsk has the status of the historic city of Russia. On the territory of Petrozavodsk there are 31 ancient settlements, the oldest of which is about 8,000 years old. The National Archive of the Republic of Karelia, founded in 1918, is a large depository of ancient documents.
