St Petersburg is famous the world over for its University. St Petersburg University is not a campus university, so it is not all located on one site. It is made up of many different buildings located around Vasilievskii Island, Central district, Admiralty district, and Petergof. Many of them are unique architectural monuments, say, Mikhailovskaia Dacha and Bobrinski’s Palace, that are harmonious in combining history and modernity.

The Twelve Collegia, as the main building of the University, demonstrates a notable example of Peter the Great’s architectural period and was built by Domenico Trezzini and А. F. Shchedrin in the 18th century. Initially, it was a place for the Russian government: Senate, Synod, and collegia. In 1838, it was commissioned to the University. Since it has been housing offices, Gorky Research Library, resource centres and laboratories of the Research Park. Institute of Earth Sciences ST Petersburg University

The understanding of the role of Earth sciences is reflected in the actions of the country’s leadership, which has repeatedly emphasized the importance and enormous potential for the development of research, education and enlightenment in our subject area. The president of our country, Vladimir Putin, in the last days of April at a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Geographical Society, raised the question of developing a new concept of geographical education, starting from school. This is a responsible and interesting task, the solution of which largely depends on the actions of teachers and scientists in the field of earth sciences.

Initially, earth sciences at our University were a single whole. Higher geographical courses, from which our educational programs later grew, were created in 1916 by geographers, geologists, and soil scientists. The prevailing over the 20th century trend towards differentiation, “sprawling”, narrow specialization of sciences has divided us into different divisions. Nevertheless, our research objects are common, therefore, such a discrepancy could not continue indefinitely. It is impossible to imagine modern geology without high-tech methods for studying matter, geography without relying on the foundation of geological sciences, “inhuman” physical geography, devoid of practical access to environmental and socio-geographical disciplines. The latter, without any connection with the natural science basis, run the risk of becoming “unnatural.”

In life, many phenomena develop according to the laws of the pendulum. It is obvious that now we are faced with the task of a new synthesis of knowledge and theories in earth sciences. The solution to this problem is impossible without a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. That is why I consider the creation of the Institute of Earth Sciences as a single organism a justified and promising solution. The exchange of ideas between scientists and teachers with different experiences and views creates new opportunities for the qualitative improvement of science and education. Of course, the implementation of these opportunities will require painstaking and lengthy work.

I am sure that all the creative endeavors of the employees of the Institute of Earth Sciences should be aimed at building a universal educational and scientific complex capable of solving the problems of the interaction of nature and society; to study changes in the geospheres under the influence of human activity and natural causes; evaluate the resource potentials of regions and water areas; to study the state and transformation of the Earth’s substance and its structure in different aspects and by different methods; to model and predict changes in the states of geographical and ecological systems to develop environmental management strategies.

The first years of the establishment of the Institute of Earth Sciences were a good experience, which showed that our team can make a significant contribution to the development of St. Petersburg University. We learn to live in an open and competitive scientific environment, interact with employers, create new educational programs and research projects, and defend our international status. This is difficult, but the achievements are encouraging.

We rely on the traditions of scientific schools with centuries of history. This is a great honor and responsibility. You cannot lose anything from the accumulated positive experience. We must ensure that the traditions and achievements of these scientific schools become the basis for the formation of a new generation of researchers and new sustainable scientific and pedagogical groups, so that young people come to science with burning eyes and a thirst for discoveries and creative achievements.

Departments of University

Department of Jewish culture general information

St. Petersburg occupies a truly unique position in the field of Jewish studies, not only in Russia but also in the world. Our great city was the capital of the Russian Empire, in the territory of which about 6 million Jews lived by the beginning of the 20th century – i.e. about the same as much in modern Israel. Therefore, here, in St. Petersburg, as early as the 19th century, the earliest Jewish public, educational, and charitable organizations appeared in Russia, it was here that Russian academic Judaism was born. The largest libraries of Jewish manuscripts in the world are concentrated in the libraries and archives of St. Petersburg. These are the most valuable collections, from the oldest biblical Masoretic manuscripts to documents and materials related to the history and culture of Jews in Eastern Europe and Russia in modern times: tens of thousands of documents that are crucial for studying the culture and history of Jews in different eras and in different regions.

Therefore, the creation of the title department for the study of Jewish culture in all its diversity at the oldest Russian university for more than a century and a half was the dream of the Jewish intelligentsia and all who were engaged in Jewish studies. But, as the first Prime Minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, noted, “who knows the history of the Jewish people and does not believe in miracles … he is not realistic.” And in 2000, under the agreement between St. Petersburg State University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, an international scientific and educational center for Bible studies and Jewish studies was created at the Faculty of Philosophy. And on March 5, 2011, a truly historical event for Russian and world Jewish studies takes place: by order of the rector of St. Petersburg State University, Professor Nikolai Mikhailovich Kropachev, the Department of Jewish Culture of St. Petersburg State University was created. The range of the cathedral study of Jewish civilization is multifaceted: more than three thousand years of history and culture of Jews in the most important areas of their residence, religion, philosophy, literature, languages.

And all this is in close interconnection with the history and culture of other nations, for, as Professor N. M. Kropachev, Rector of St. Petersburg State University rightly observes, as applied to our country, “how can one read the course of Russian history without taking into account the importance of Jewish culture”. This idea is true in relation to other leading countries of the world, world civilization.

The educational programs of the Department of Jewish Culture are international in nature.

The partners of the educational program of the Department are:

  • Hebrew University of Jerusalem
  • Ariel University;
  • Hebrew Language Academy;
  • National Library of Israel;
  • Central Zionist Archive;
  • World Hebrew Union;
  • Sorbonne 8 (Paris).

Department of History of Philosophy St Petersburg National University

The pedagogical work of our department consists of three areas. First, the teaching of the history of Western philosophy to philosophers. All students of the Department of Philosophy master independent courses in ancient philosophy, the philosophy of the Middle Ages, the philosophy of the Renaissance and the New Age, the German classical philosophy, the philosophy of Marxism and the foreign philosophy of the 19th century. Each philosopher student studies these courses for eight semesters of four, and sometimes six hours a week. Secondly, together with the Department of Contemporary Foreign Philosophy, we provide a specialization in the history of foreign philosophy for students of the philosophy department who wish to specialize in this field. Special courses are taught for them and special seminars are held, under the guidance of teachers of the department they carry out term papers and dissertations. Students of the specialization “History of Foreign Philosophy” are the only philosophers who must study the Latin language and optionally Greek for three semesters. Thirdly, we teach general courses and special courses on the history of philosophy at the humanitarian faculties of St. Petersburg State University (philological. Oriental, journalism, historical). A significant place in the work of the department is the training of graduate students, doctoral students and applicants for the history of philosophy.

Department of Conflictology St Petersburg National University

The content of the educational program reflects the level of development of domestic conflictology. Conceptually, it is built taking into account the abstract-analytical and applied nature of conflict resolution. The abstract-analytical nature is represented by the course “General  Conflictology” and industry conflict studies, such as “Political Conflictology”, “Economic Conflictology”, “Legal Conflictology” and others. Its applied aspect is presented in the course “Conflict Resolution Technologies”, as well as in conflict management technologies in various areas of life, which, as a rule, complete courses related to industry conflict resolution.

 The course “General Conflictology” creates the basic basis of the educational program. It is structured into sections and topics that reflect the content of the course. The sections of the course cover the following conflict resolution problems: the emergence and formation of general conflict resolution as a science; subject and methodology of research in conflict resolution; basic methodological approaches in the interpretation of social conflicts and their role in the formation of modern general conflictology; methodology of conflict analysis of society and man; social conflict analysis methodology; the concept of institutionalization, its levels, forms and role in resolving social conflicts; features of conflictogenicity of modern civilization and society. The objectives of the course are the acquisition by students of basic knowledge about the forms of conflict interaction, the causes, conditions and factors that give rise to the conflict, about the place and role of conflicts in the functioning and development of social systems, and the ways and methods of preventing and resolving conflicts.

 The program presents courses in industry conflict resolution. These courses, such as “Political Conflictology”, “Ethnic Conflictology”, “Legal Conflictology”, “Economic Conflictology”, “Conflictology of International Relations”, “Conflictology of the Spiritual Sphere”, “Pedagogical Conflictology”, “Regional Conflictology”, give an idea of the subject industry conflict studies, reveal specific conflict management technologies in various areas of society. In these courses, the conflicts in various spheres of life of modern society are analyzed, specific differences in the conflict interaction are indicated, and the differences in conflict management and conflict resolution technologies are presented. The latter is necessary not only in order to show the specifics of the conflict in one sphere or another, but also to show that for the regulation and resolution of conflicts in various fields both a set of general tools are used, to which negotiations should be attributed, as well as their specific means. So, for example, in order to regulate a political conflict, in addition to negotiations, political means are also used, which include instruments of general political significance, as well as state policies that prevent a conflict. So, preventing the conflict between labor and capital, the power of social policy has been invaluable for some time, and reasonable containment or, conversely, increased competition by the state creates a system of concerted actions by market participants.

The applied aspect of the educational program is presented by the course “Conflict Resolution Technologies” which reveals the methods of preventing, managing and resolving conflicts that have developed in the practice of a democratic society. This course is invaluable in its practical importance in the formation of a specialist in the field of conflict resolution. Within the framework of this course, students not only acquire knowledge about conflict management methods, but also acquire skills to work with conflicts, as with uncoordinated actions, opposing positions and a perception system.

 In general, the educational program provides the necessary level of knowledge and skills of a specialist in the field of working with conflicts, defining strategies and tactics in conflict, regulation, management and resolution of conflicts. The knowledge and skills acquired by students in the process of mastering an educational program make them indispensable specialists both in the field of conflict theory and the practice of resolving them.

Department of Ontology and Theory of Knowledge

Ontology is a branch of philosophical knowledge that serves as the basis for all other philosophical disciplines. The question of existence, essence and existence was the beginning of philosophy in both historical and methodological relations. Every philosophy puts him before tackling other problems. What does it mean to be? What is being? How to understand what is non-existence? How to pose such questions correctly? Such a questioning must necessarily precede both Hamlet’s “to be or not to be?”, And Chernyshevsky’s “what to do?”. Even the famous Kantian three questions cannot cancel it.

 The question of existence and existence inevitably entails the question of what the world around us is. What is the status of this world? Will he disappear in our absence? Do we all see him the same way? How do we know him? And where are the limits of this knowledge? All these are questions of epistemology, the second most important section of philosophical knowledge.

The Department of Ontology and Theory of Knowledge, therefore, knows those parts of philosophical knowledge that underlie the entire building of philosophy. Ethics, axiology, methodology – the upper floors of this building, which can be accessed only by entering from below. Metaphysics and dialectics are the two paths that lead to it. Neither grandiose philosophical systems, nor the asystematic thinking that our era is inclined to do without ontology and epistemology. So, our department, changing its appearance, and sometimes even the name itself, is involved in both the past philosophy and its present.

Department of Social Philosophy and Philosophy of History

At the department, complementarily complementing each other, various social and philosophical concepts coexist today – Marxism and phenomenology, structural-functional analysis and the Russian idealistic tradition. Around the department its asset is grouped – professionals in the field of social philosophy, constantly participating in seminars and conferences organized by the department. In addition, the department sees its duty in supporting amateur philosophers organized in the St. Petersburg Philosophical Club.

Department of Philosophy and Culturology of the East

For many years, subjects and disciplines related to the problems of philosophy, culture and religion of the East have occupied a large place in the educational process of the Faculty of Philosophy. They are widely represented in all four departments of the faculty and there is a tendency to increase them. This, in particular, achieves a real overcoming of West-centrism and at the same time expresses recognition of the Euro-Asian culture and spiritual life of our society and the geopolitical status of Russia. Among students, a steady interest in orientalistic topics has been established. In an effort to satisfy the formed request, the Faculty of Philosophy attracted specialists from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and graduates of the Oriental faculty of our university to read courses. At the same time, scientific work began and a program for philosophical comparative studies was created at the department of modern foreign philosophy. For two years, the faculty held a scientific seminar “East: philosophy, religion, culture.”

Thus, all the conditions have ripened for the creation of an educational and scientific unit in the form of the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies of the East, which would be able to organize all the currently fragmented work in this area. This department should also become a graduate and bear methodological responsibility for the preparation of a specialty “cultural studies” in the specialization of “Oriental culture”.

The department has three main regional areas, each of which has its own curriculum and staff of teachers.

Department of Philosophy of Science and Technology St Petersburg National University

The philosophy of science and technology is located at the intersection of various philosophical disciplines. Answering the question of how science and technology correspond to the essence of man, she finds herself in dialogue with philosophical anthropology. Considering the communication and values of scientific communities, to which the community of philosophers partially belongs, he shares a common problem with ethics. Contrasting or, conversely, linking the imagery of science and art, artistic practices and modern technology, is close to aesthetics. By proclaiming that science and technology are cultural elements that change in history, they appeal to ideas in the field of cultural philosophy and the philosophy of history.

We invite you to the department’s page to get to know more about the interests of employees and the courses that they teach, to learn about news, organized events and projects. We invite you to our department too – to share the experience of philosophizing about science and technology, discuss problems, seek answers and raise new questions.

Department of Philosophical Anthropology

The creation of the Department of Philosophical Anthropology also pursued scientific goals – the development of a modern theory that promotes a better understanding of a person’s place in the world and the search for new ways of his development. Philosophical anthropology is also a practical discipline that has both methodological significance for a number of special human sciences that are being actively developed, including at St. Petersburg State University, as well as a concrete application to the social and moral, mental and physical practices of human and social production.

Institute of Chemistry St Petersburg National University

The Institute of Chemistry includes 14 departments and three new interdepartmental laboratories: Biomedical Chemistry, Chemical Pharmacology and the Laboratory of Bio-Hybrid Technologies, which was established in early 2018 based on the results of the Mega-Grants Competition of the Government of the Russian Federation

Education at the Institute of Chemistry in undergraduate and graduate programs is carried out under the programs “Chemistry” and “Chemistry, Physics and Mechanics of Materials”. The program in the direction of “Chemistry” is more focused on the model of classical university education and the formation of competencies, requiring both deep fundamental knowledge in chemistry and possession of practical skills in applying modern experimental and theoretical methods. Teaching on the educational program of the master’s program “Chemistry” is conducted in Russian and English. In the second direction, an interdisciplinary approach is being implemented, and the main focus is on studying methods for obtaining new functional materials, and on conducting both fundamental and applied scientific research.

 Last year, a set for a new engineering program “Fundamental and Applied Aspect of Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies” was opened. The program is aimed at training scientific, teaching and innovative personnel with not only deep fundamental knowledge, but also capable of marketing research, analysis and development of technologies for the production and production of functional, composite nanomaterials, carbon, nanobiomaterials and products based on them, possessing the skills of project activities. The curriculum of the program also provides for the acquisition of knowledge in the areas of business communications, economic, legal foundations and management of the processes of creating scientific and technical products.

The cultural capital of Russia, northern Venice, the brainchild of Peter, is often called St. Petersburg, the second largest city in our vast city with a population of 4.8 million people. Few cities in the world can boast so many attractions, museum collections, opera houses and drama theaters, estates and palaces, parks and monuments. Peter’s literary and musical heritage is no less outstanding – the number of writers, poets and composers who inspiredly worked on its foggy shores amazes even the most daring imagination. Along with Paris, Rome and Venice, St. Petersburg is included in the UNESCO List as a city in which the entire historical center is taken under patronage. Among other things, there are temples of 42 faiths, including an amazing mosque with a porcelain dome, a Buddhist monastery and one of the most beautiful chapels of the Order of Malta.
