About the University
Tula State Lev Tolstoy Pedagogical University (also known as TSPU) was founded on September 19, 1938 as an independent institution of higher education. On 18 July, 1958, it was named after Lev Tolstoy. On 29 December 1994, the University was awarded the status of State Pedagogical University.
In 2009, Tula SPU became a laureate of the contest “Gold Medal “European Quality” in the category “Top 100 Universities in Russia” and won in the category “The Best Russian Specialized University”. In 2012, the University was included in the National Register of the “Leading scientific organizations of Russia”.
TSPU infrastructure includes six academic buildings having state-of-the-art equipment. There are ten faculties. They are Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Information Technology, Faculty of Technology and Business, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Psychology, International Faculty, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Faculty of Physical Culture, Faculty of Russian Philology and Documentation and Faculty of History and Law.…

The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Information Technologies
The Faculty of Physics and Mathematics was founded at the same time as Lev Tolstoy Tula State Pedagogical Institute in 1938. In 2006 the Department of Physics and Mathematics and the Department of Information technologies were unified into a new department – the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Information technologies.
The structure of the department includes three sub-departments: sub-department of Algebra, Mathematical analysis and Geometry; sub-department of General and Theoretical Physics; sub-department of Information technologies.

Staff of the Faculty
The faculty of the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Information technologies is represented by 45 teachers, 40 of them have academic degree and 14 teachers are PhDs and professors. Teachers of the department take part in numerous research works and scientific conferences, their research articles are published in domestic and international academic periodicals. The faculty regularly passes further training.
Facilities
Facilities and Resources of the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Information technologies include computer labs, 4 lecture halls, 2 auditoriums, 9 labs, and classrooms. Computer labs are equipped with personal computers of various modifications, which are connected to a local area network. Also there is an access to the global Internet. All the PCs have licensed software. Total number of computers with Internet access is at least one computer for 2 students.
The students at the university have access to modern professional databases, reference information and search engines.
The Faculty of Foreign Languages
The Department of Foreign Languages is one of the fastest growing and innovative ones at the University. It is the department with long and rich history, which has trained highly qualified professors and talented students. It is difficult to overestimate the contribution of the department to the university; over the past 70 years the department has been constantly developing, growing and evolving.
The Department of Foreign Languages of Tula State Lev Tolstoy Pedagogical University was founded in October 1944 and rose from the small amount of faculty of ten professors and forty students up to one of the biggest and the most important departments, which includes 800 students and 100 academics.
Speaking about the department it’s worth mentioning the high level of professor’s professionalism, their teamwork and quality of their work. Students of our department demonstrate a high level of knowledge and they possess deep inner culture and education. That allows graduates of the department to be constantly in-demand on the labor market and to get prestigious job not only in our region, but also throughout the whole country.

The Faculty of Russian Philology and Document Science
The Department of Russian Philology and Document Science was founded in 1938 as a part of the Department of History and Philology, and in 1979 it became a separate department and was renamed first to the Department of Russian Language and Literature. In 2008 the department was renamed to the Department of Russian Philology and Document Science. There are two sub-departments: sub-department of Russian language and Literature and sub-department of Document Science and Russian Language Stylistics. At the present time 429 students study at the department.

Staff of the Faculty
The faculty of the Department of Russian Philology and Document Science is represented by highly qualified specialists who regularly take part in further trainings. Among the teachers of the department there are 5 Doctors of Science and 17 PhDs.
The Faculty of History and Law
The Faculty of History and Law is one of the oldest departments of the university. It is one of the three faculties, which began with the history of Tula State Pedagogical Institute.
The first admission of students at the Faculty of History began on October 15, 1938, when 33 students were enrolled as freshmen. The first dean of the faculty was Anna Ivanovna Krasnova.
Because of the Great Patriotic War the first students graduated ahead of time. Many students of the faculty volunteered for the battle-front. Among them were the secretary of the Komsomol organization of the Institute Boris Markiyan, students Vladimir Ivanov, Oleg Stechkin, Peter Danilin. In 1942 the Institute returned to Tula from the evacuation and on April 1, 1942, classes were resumed in a building on Mendeleevskaya 7, which was a military hospital during the war.
In 1955 the Faculty of History was united with the Department of the Russian Language and Literature and existed as a single historical-philological faculty until 1979. From 1979 to 2011 the Faculty had the name of the Faculty of History, and in 2011 it was renamed as the Faculty of History and Law.

The faculty employs more than 40 teachers, many of whom are its graduates. There are Doctors of Historical sciences, Doctors of Education, Professors, Candidate of Historical Sciences and others. The management team of Tula State Lev Tolstoy Pedagogical University also includes the graduates of the Faculty like Vice-Rectors for Teaching and Studies, Scientific Research, as well as Career-Oriented Work and Interaction with General Education Institutions.

Staff of the Faculty
The educational process is carried out by highly qualified teaching staff. More than 90% of the faculty members have academic degrees and titles. Young teachers successfully combine teaching with post-graduate studies. Students have a wide range of internships under the guidance of experienced teachers. This includes teacher-training practice in educational institutions of Tula region, legal practice in the executive and judiciary institutions of Tula region, Belinskaya archaeological expedition to the Crimea, museum practice in cultural institutions of Tula region, internships in tourist agencies.
The Faculty of Psychology
The Department of Psychology was founded on the 18th of February 2000 by the decision of the Academic Board of Tula State Lev Tolstoy pedagogical university.
Since the 1st of September 2013, the Department includes two sub-departments: the sub-department of Psychology and Education and the sub-department of Special Psychology.
The dean of the Department is Natalia Stepanova (Candidate of Psychological Science, associate professor).

The faculty is represented by 55 professors, who are PhDs, professors and assistant professors. High qualification, scientific potential and diverse professional experience of the teaching staff of the Department provide a highly quality students’ training which conforms to the requirements of modern society. Faculty professors are members of the public professional associations of psychologists.
Facilities
For the organization of the educational process the Department of Psychology possesses different kinds of equipment and facilities, which provide quality students’ training, their practical and scientific research, which are realized according to the syllabus.
The main educational process is held in the building №4. There exist 4 special rooms; all lectures hall have multimedia equipment and computer facilities, which provide the access to the Internet.
The Department possesses special rooms representing classrooms for lectures, seminars, group and individual tutorials, for monitoring and testing, and also for individual work of students.
Special rooms are equipped with specialized furniture and technical training aids, the aim of which is the representation of information to the large audience. There is a special set of demonstration equipment for giving lectures, and also there exist training aids ensuring topical illustration which coincide with curriculum.
The laboratory of psychodiagnosis is equipped with diagnostic system depending on the purpose of study. Due to the specific features which are associated with the profile of the basic educational program, students have the opportunity to use all these diagnostic materials.
The classroom of Logopedics has the computer technology with the access to the Internet and to electronic information – educational network of the university and the department. Graphic-didactic materials are also represented in this room.
The room of psychological training is provided with the following equipment: training chairs with armrests – 20 items, flipchart board with complete accessories – 1 item, portable barrier – 1 item, mirrors- 2 items.
The room for postgraduate students is equipped with television, laptop, flipchart board and multimedia projector.
The room for individual work of students and the room of psychology have a great book collection, which includes 2763 publications, also the rooms have computer technologies with the access to the Internet.
The Faculty of Technology and Business
The history of training teachers for polytechnic teaching of students in Tula State Pedagogical Institute begins in 1956 with the foundation of “Basics of production” sub department at the Physics and Mathematics department. In 1964 Physics and Technology department with two divisions: physical and general technical – was founded in Lev Tolstoy Tula State Pedagogical Institute. In 1979 due to a significant expansion of the demand for teachers of general technical disciplines Industrial-pedagogical department was founded. Since 1997 the department partly changed the major and was renamed into Technology, Business and Economics Department as the new tasks were put. In 2002-2003 in view of the opening of a new agricultural major the Department of Technology, Business and Economics was reorganized. Technology, Economics and Agriculture department was founded as a result of the reorganization. On 1st February, 2013 due to increasing the number of majors the department was renamed into Technology and Business department. The structure of department includes three sub departments: Agro Engineering and Safety of Technosphere; Technology and Service; Economics and Managements.

Staff of the Faculty
Teaching and learning activities are provided by highly qualified faculty. The faculty of the department is represented by 49 teachers: 34 are candidates of Sciences, 9 – PhD There are 7 Demidov foundation prizewinners and 3 Mosin prizewinners among the teachers of the department. Teachers’ research findings are represented in numerous monographs and research articles. Faculty scientists received more than 120 patents for inventions. Many textbooks developed by teachers of the department are recommended for the educational process by Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

The Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities
The Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities was established on December 1 2008 after uniting of a number of teaching and non-teaching humanitarian majors. The faculty is dynamically developing, successfully combining traditions and innovations in the organization of the educational process.
The faculty’s educational work is characterized by:
- a combination of extensive humanitarian preparation of students with intensive study of a separate branch of the humanities;
- individual approach to educational process of every student in accordance with their talents and creative skills;
- combination of theoretical studies with practical work within creative workshops, professional trainings, practical courses, internships, etc.

There are a number of academic centers (The research-and-production center “Himreaktivdiagnostika”, The Innovative Research Centre “New Chemical Technologies”), labs (Zoological laboratory, Laboratory of functional regulation of hemodynamics) and school of sciences at the department where the students, graduates and teachers can conduct researches.

The faculty of the Department of Natural Sciences is represented by Doctors of Science and PhDs. The teachers of the department won 32 grants from various funds and programs for the last 3 years, published more than 480 research articles.
The Faculty of Physical Education
The Department of Physical Education was founded in 1977 and became an expression of pedagogical community care of health, harmonious development, the physical improvement of the younger generation.
The aim of the department is to prepare school teachers, highly qualified sportsmen, organization of scientific research in the field of physical culture and sports, the creation of regional programs of physical education and rehabilitation of all categories of the population of Tula region.

The department has an active, hard-working teaching staff. Today the Department of Physical Education is a modern division in the structure of Lev Tolstoy Tula State Pedagogical University and includes sub-department of Theory and Methods of Physical Education and Sports, sub-department of PE, university sports club. The faculty is represented by professors, PhD and candidates of Sciences.

The Department of Physical Education has modern teaching equipment, facilities and advanced sports infrastructure. New modern sports facilities are built and put into operation. Today, there are 15 sports venue at the department.
The International Faculty
The International Faculty was founded in 1977. For more than thirty-year history of the faculty hundreds of foreign citizens from more than 40 countries have trained in the department of pre-university training in the basic educational programs and additional education programs.
Since 2010 the faculty is headed by PhD in Pedagogical sciences, associate professor Tatyana Borisovna Kashpireva.
There is department of Russian as foreign language on the faculty, which is headed by Doctor in Philological sciences, Professor Raisa Vasilievna Lopukhina, and preparatory department for foreign citizens, which is headed by Doctor of Philological sciences, Professor Irina Evgenievna Gerasimenko.

Staff of the Faculty
At the International Faculty 2 doctors of sciences, 7 PhD of sciences, 1 foreign teacher and also senior teachers and assistants with extensive practical experience of work with foreign citizens work.
Over the years of working with variable cohort of student the teachers of the Faculty have accumulated the rich experience in dealing with carriers of various national cultures. They are engaged in development of theoretical and methodological issues of Russian language teaching and subjects of specialization (a common theme of department research – “Lingvoculturological aspects of teaching Russian language to foreign citizens”). Teachers also examine the issues of national-oriented techniques of psychological adaptation of foreign students, intercultural communication, typology, pedagogy and psychology.
Facilities
The International Faculty has 12 lecture rooms equipped with technics that allows to give classes on a high level. There is a computer room with Internet access, which is used both in the educational process, and for the organization of independent work of students.
Foreign citizens reside in a special 9-storey hostel, which is located on the campus and guarded around the clock.
All academic buildings are equipped with a local area network, computer, language labs and multimedia classrooms and are provided with the resource access to the research library. The university has put in place all the necessary arrangements for successful learning and self-development of students.
On TSPU campus there are 4 dormitories. Accommodations in dormitories of the University are designed for temporary living and living of students from other cities and foreign students enrolled during full-time studying, as well as university entrants for the period of admission tests. In hostels there are comfort living conditions for living, learning and recreation of students, reading rooms, lounges, a gym, sports fields, a leisure center.
Hostels are located in close proximity to the main academic buildings.
The structure of Tula State Lev Tolstoy Pedagogical University (TSPU) contains Center of Scientific and Educational Literature, which deals with the information space development of the university and provides the users soft goods, services and facilities.
There is an access to the Scientific Electronic Library “e-Library”, full-text databases of national periodicals “East View”, electronic library system “University library online”, “Ibooks”, full-text database of foreign scientific publications: Science Online, Annual Reviews, Sage Journals online, Oxford University Press, Cambridge Journals Digital Archive for students and staff.
Center of Scientific and Educational Literature, in addition to traditional library service departments with library and reading rooms, has an e-learning laboratory, electronic reading room with access to the resources of Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library.
Tula State Lev Tolstoy Pedagogical University pays special attention to the organization of sports and recreational activities, offers modern conditions and material and technical resources for physical education and sport, and also strengthens and develops sports infrastructure.
The campus includes a sanatorium; a cafeteria, a pool, 7 gyms, a table tennis hall, 2 ski depots, outdoor summer volleyball and basketball courts, a football field with artificial turf, two tennis courts.
Sports and fitness base of TSPU works in full mode all year round, including summer and holidays.
The University is a multiple winner of the All-Russian competition of Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation “The University of Healthy Lifestyle”.
The university implements more than 25 significant social programs and projects, three of which (the competition of social projects “Luch”, the festival of amateur for pupils and students of secondary and higher vocational education institutions of Tula Region “Russia Sings in Me”; regional competition of scientific research “Great Neighbors of Tula region”) are included in the national priority project “Education”.

Training programs offered by the University are designed for wide range of participants: from pupils to specialists.
The Center of Languages and Cultures work is based on the belief that qualitative linguistic education can and must be available to a wide range of people. This Center combines traditional activities and new tendencies such as group lessons and individual education.
In the Center of Psychological, Pedagogical and Social Help to Children and Adults “Nadezhda” you can get not only consultations from experienced pedagogues and psychologists but also practical help in a large specter of questions: solving problems connected with pupils’ studies, questions of adaptation and child’s readiness to study at school, healthy lifestyle culture formation, professional growth training and many others. The center has specialists working on individual author’s programs: developing, correctional and rehabilitation.
The University’s activity aimed at the development of the system of search and support of gifted children includes not only preparatory courses and creative laboratories, but also Lev Tolstoy TSPU Lyceum, which has been functioning for more than 15 years, and the system of university classes. Within the framework of implementation of additional education programs (elective courses) the University creates ways of pupils teaching, which correspond to their individual needs and provide the principal of continuity “school-university”, development of children’s general and special talents. The lyceum’s curriculum is defined not only by the specialization of education but also by the senior pupils’ needs to develop their cognitive abilities.
The Center of Additional and Vocational Education was established in the University in 2006.
The center deals with the development and implementation of the policy of life-long additional vocational education, which provides unification and coordination of faculties’ and university services’ activity to improve qualification and widen the network of additional vocational educational services.
To fulfill all the above mentioned tasks the center has worked out the following programs:
- Additional vocational education programs of professional retraining;
- Programs of refresher courses;
- Additional educational programs.
The main features of additional educational programs:
- Competences approach and modular principal of programs’ structure;
- Education with modern technical equipment;
- Practically-oriented approach;
- Usage of e-learning technologies in the educational process;
- Interactive forms of teaching.
Such features allow to enlarge the range of potential participants of the courses, adjust various programs to individual specialists taking into account their particularities and the basic level of their education.
The university implements more than 70 programs of supplementary education.
More than 700 participants attend courses of supplementary education programs annually.
The range of additional vocational education programs is quite large. In 2011 the programs within the framework of 4 integrated category groups were worked out and implemented. The groups are as follows: physical and mathematical sciences, humanities, social sciences, education and pedagogics.
The purpose of refresher courses is to renew theoretic knowledge and practical skills of the specialists due to increasing requirements for the qualification level and the need to master new methods of professional task-solving.
Refresher courses participants are pedagogical staff of regional educational institutions; scientific and pedagogical staff; engineering and technical staff; social work specialists: youth outreach; state civil workers etc.
For the last two years the university has been a participant of the regional event “The development of e-learning for handicapped children” which has been carried out within the framework of the national project “Education” from 2009 to 2014.
The aim of refresher courses “Organization of e-learning for handicapped children” is training of educational institution personnel so that they are able to use modern informational and communicative technologies to teach children with special educational needs. 180 teachers of regional schools attended the courses in the period from 2010 to 2011.
Educational environment at student’s home is crucial for a good result during the e-learning course. More than 150 parents of children with special educational needs got an opportunity to find out about advantages and basics of e-learning in Lev Tolstoy TSPU.
Our University has worked out a lot of refresher courses for different categories of participants within the framework of ‘The National Educational Institutions’ Integration into The World Informational Space Based on Interactive and Electronic Technologies’ Development’ project. These courses were given a certificate at the creativity contest of academic projects, innovative solutions and Higher Vocational Education Programs. This contest was arranged within the framework of the 9th all-Russian Forum ‘Educational Environment 2010’.
The University is a member of the Interstate Association of Postgraduate Education.
University’s modern material and technical base, sufficient intellectual resources, gathered positive experience allow it to compete successfully in the educational services market in the field of additional vocational education. The university offers the following professional retraining programs:
