UrFU in Rankings
Ural Federal University became the first Russian University to be noticed by Fitch Ratings Agency. This agency included UrFU into the Long-Term Foreign- and Local-Currency Issuer Default Ratings (“IDR”) at “BB+” level. Besides, the university was assigned a National Long-Term rating of ‘AA (rus)’ and a Short-term foreign currency IDR of ‘B’.
Ural Federal University made it to the top three leading Russian universities as per the number of the Russian Science Foundation grantees.
According to the results of the contest conducted by the Pension Fund of Russia, Ural Federal University was declared the best employer.
UrFU Endowment Fund entered the list of three university leaders obtaining the maximum financial support from Potanin Foundation.
Ural Federal University was one of the winners of the Best Taxpayer 2013 contest.
The Ural Federal University electronic archive is ranked first in Russia and was included into top-400 of Webometrics Open Archives’ Ranking of World Universities.
Specialized Educational Scientific Center (SESC) of UrFU confirmed its status of the best school of the Urals and was included into top 10 of the best Russian schools, according to the results of the study of Moscow Center for Continuous Mathematical Education, conducted with the assistance of the Federal Ministry of Education and Science.
Ural Federal University took several positions in the top-5 of the “Quality of admission to the state-funded places in the RF public universities” ranking prepared by the Higher School of Economics with the assistance of the Federal Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
The UrFU Department of Journalism made it to the top ten in the ranking of 100 Russian universities training Bachelors of Mass Media. This ranking was prepared by the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation.
Business School of UrFU was included into the world rating of the best 1000 Business Schools, prepared by the Eduniversal Agency, ranking 12th among the best Russian business schools.
UrFU International Profile
Ural Federal University has strong global connections; internationalization is one of the University’s top priorities. UrFU has established partnerships with about 400 foreign universities from all over the globe; the University actively participates in international network projects: Erasmus+, BRICS Network University, CIS University, SCO University, University of the Arctic (UArctic), Association of Sino-Russian Technical Universities.
More than 3 100 international students from 80 countries are currently enrolled at Ural Federal University. The majority of our international students come from China, South Korea, Mexico, Mongolia, Vietnam, Turkey, Guinea and Central Asia. The University holds annual international summer schools devoted to Russian language and culture, economics and management, engineering.
Annually more than 150 UrFU students and researchers go abroad within academic mobility programs. There is a local group of the Board of European Students of Technology (BEST) at UrFU; activities of BEST group allow UrFU students to participate in short-term courses at European universities 4 times a year.
UrFU scientists participate in international research funding programs such as the EU’s Seventh Framework Program (FP7), Open Society Institute’s International Higher Education Support Program (HESP), and Regional Seminar for Excellence in Teaching (ReSET). Our specialists implement a whole range of applied research projects collaborating with their partners from Germany, USA, South Korea etc.
The University is also developing ties and undertaking collaborative research through inviting foreign professors to Ekaterinburg: e.g., since 2012 Dr Jean Jouzel (France), co-laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize, has been the head of the UrFU Climate Change Laboratory. From 2013 the University has launched a large-scale project “Returning to Europe: Russian elites and European innovations, norms and models (XVIII – early XXth centuries)” under the guidance of a renowned French researcher, Dr Marie-Pierre Rey.
List of International Research Laboratories
In 2013 Ural Federal University entered the list of Russian universities that won in a competitive selection for the right to receive special subsidy targeted at enhancing the global competitiveness of the university and increasing its positions in the international rankings. In October 2013 the Roadmap that will allow UrFU to enter the top-100 of world universities by 2020 was officially approved.
Currently the University is ranked among top-500 world universities according to QS World University Ranking and placed 63rd among BRICS countries universities (QS World University Rankings: BRICS).
Our Achievements
Ural Federal University is the largest regional platform for international events. In 2014 UrFU hosted the ACM-ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) World Finals. In April 2016 the university became a venue for the First Forum of the BRICS Network University, and the International Young Physicists’ Tournament in June 2016.
UrFU is a corporate affiliate of the Russian Council for International Affairs.
Ural Federal University is pursuing greater understanding of other cultures and places. It is the meeting point of various world cultures. In 2008 a unique Centre of Chinese language and culture – the Confucius Institute – was established on the basis of UrFU Institute of Social and Political Sciences. In 2013 the Thai Cultural Centre was officially opened in the University; in 2016 – the Center of Iranian Studies.
Annually Ural Federal University is visited by more than 100 foreign delegations representing the leading world universities, diplomatic structures and major companies and enterprises.

Dormitories
UrFU campus is comprised of various types of dormitories, with both Russian and international students living in them. There will be no need for long commuting: the dormitories are as close as a 5 minutes’ walk to the university. One dormitory room can accommodate two to three people. If you want to live together with students from your country, please inform the university administration. Your request will be met if possible. Each dormitory building has showers and toilets. Depending on the type of dormitory, bathrooms may be located either in sections or in corridors. Dormitory kitchens are equipped with everything that is necessary for cooking – you are only going to need your own dishes and cutlery. Location of kitchens depends of the type of dormitory as well. UrFU dormitories have gyms, lounge halls, laundries with free access. There is also a student canteen.
